This seems like a good idea to me... http://www.thisishullandeastriding.co.uk/story-16880956-detail/story.html? It's got to be better than empty shops, has anyone seen them and are they any good?
They did something similar with the old Argos shop and TJ Hughes in Ferensway. If it is as good as that it will be a very good idea
Whenever i'm heading down Lowgate, i always wonder why there's a picture of the Last Supper in the window of Vodka Revolution.
They were drinking raspberry mojitos and sex on the beach to symbolise Jesus' blood at the last supper. Is that not common knowledge?
It,s an outstanding idea. Why leave an empty shop winow as is ? I love art anyway, and making it more accessible to all can't hurt. Were in a recession,im a great believer in making the best you can out of every situation in life.
The High Street in this country is in a real mess and needs some serious rethinking from the likes of Mary Portas if its ever gonna to return to its former glories. I see Nottingham surprisingly has one of the highest vacancy rates with Margate (where my wife hails from) top of the pile. Those that continaully criticise Hull please take note. The artistic makeover of empty shop fronts is a top idea in the meantime though.
Now that would be Art! You could win the Turner prize. You might have to bum her all around the country on tour.
Good idea for me. Nothing more depressing than to see a load of empty shop units in your city's Central Business District. Sign of the times unfortunately. It doesn't take away the unfortunate truth of the situation, but it does at least provide a temporary façade. What else can we do?
The high street in its current guise is in a death spiral that it will never recover from. High on the list of issues are: 1) Commercial rent and rates >> website costs 2) Public sector final salary pensions obligations must be paid = Exorbitant parking fees
There are also more shops in Hull than is absolutely necessary. St Stephens just transferred much of the focus across the city. Something needs doing with Whitefriargate - it should be a premium area - it just looks **** and run down with empty shops, discount shops, seasonal shops etc all been done to death though!
Whitefriargate will reinvent itself - not as a shopping street but possibly as residential or at best quality shops (post Siemens) The architecture is there to ensure the area will regenerate in some shape or form. Be positive ffs.
Fookin' Mary Portas - who made her retail guru? She's a window dresser - no more no less - and it really is the case that cos she put herself forward as some kind of expert and said it often enough everyone took it as gospel. She has no more credentials to save the High Street than Malcolm Shotton. We should sign more players called Malcolm with taches.
It won't 're-invent' itself will it? Sorry, what precisely was negative? I said it looked **** (which it does) and something needed doing (which it does). Hardly negative!
Mary Portas runs one of the most successful brand consultancies in the country, she's a window dresser, in the same way that Bradley Wiggins sometimes likes to go on a bike ride.
