PHIL JAGIELKA admits Everton FC will be eager to teach “disrespectful” Alan Pardew another lesson by beating Newcastle again.

The Magpies boss claimed his side were operating in a different league to the Toffees prior to Everton’s 3-1 victory on the final day of last season.

Jagielka, 30, is relishing Newcastle’s Goodison visit on Monday night, and the chance to reinforce the importance of consistency when it comes to clubs who want to rub shoulders with the Premier League’s European contenders.

He said: “I wouldn’t say there was a bit of an edge to the game, but I think it’s a little bit disrespectful for someone to say something like that after one good season.


“Fair play, Newcastle had a fantastic season and massively overachieved, but they aren’t the first team to overachieve for a season.

“In the Premier League it’s all about consistency, and if you look at how we have performed over the years, then it’s a little bit disrespectful to come out and say something like that.”

Jagielka has been outstanding during Everton’s impressive start to the season, but admitted he has been disappointed with his form in the previous two campaigns.

“We’re only four or five games into the season but I needed a good start to the season,” he said. “You set yourself high standards and I’ve maybe not reached them as consistently as I’d like in the last season or so.

“It’s important we got off to a good start this season and we have another Monday night game at Goodison and hopefully the boys can do well again. We enjoy those Monday night games especially when the other teams are like Man United and Newcastle, who always bring great support.

“The result was great for us against United but after the disappointing result and performance against West Brom hopefully we can bounce back at home.”

The ex-Sheffield United defender started for England on Tuesday in the absence of an injured John Terry, and said the show of belief by Three Lions manager Roy Hodgson has given him a lift.

He added: “It was a boost of confidence to get the nod. I don’t think there is much to choose between me and Gaz (Gary Cahill). We are good friends, we mess about at table tennis and things like that.

“It’s hard knowing it’s one from two. We got told the day before so that gave us a chance to prepare.

“But I know if one of the first-choice centre-backs is injured for the next time, I’m not automatically straight in. Gaz has got as good a chance of playing.

“It was a bit like old times (against Ukraine when he partnered ex-Blue Joleon Lescott in defence alongside Leighton Baines). Bainesy has played the last three games for England and has done really well, but the rest of the team is a lot different to back in the day.”

Happy to see the Match Day thread, early or not.

We'll have to sit on the fence over the weekend and see how it pans out with regards league positions for the rest, it shouldn't affect our performance on the day, but as supporters I'm sure we'd all prefer a traditional Saturday 3pm kick off.

As I'm always a huge jinx, I wont make any predictions, but I will admit to being more than a little nervous at this one, especially owing to the amount of injuries we've sustained so early in the season.

 

If we sit back and play long balls in a 4-4-2 we'll get raped vs Everton.

We should just play 4-3-3 and attack. We have superior striking power and creative ability, we need to use it.

My heart says 1-2 with a good attacking performance, but my head says a crock of ****e performance and getting beat 2-1.

Tiote v Fellaini will be crucial me thinks.

Tiote has more agility, skill and is better on the ball, plus I think he's better defensively, but none of our players, even Saylor, will be much challenge for Fellaini in the air.

What we need to do is just make it hard for him, and mark the target. Let him win the headers, and do our best to keep an eye on the people around him.

Try and keep the ball on the ground. 4-3-3

With Colo out I can't see past an Everton win, **** our paper thin squad and the penny pinching of that fat **** in the summer

 

I'd be tempted to stick with a simple and very rigid 4-4-1-1 basically, with Ben Arfa the one in behind given the free role to roam around. I'd take a point in this game, and if we go behind early on we know what our mentality is like, so this might be a day for leaving Ba/Cisse on the bench and bringing them on later if necessary.

I don't think Pardew would dare leave one of them on the bench though, and I think 4-4-2/4-3-3 will be tried. Counter attacking isn't such a bad option versus Everton because Baines can leave his flank exposed at times. Fellaini is the dirtiest player in history, though hugely talented as well, and Tiote or him could easily get a red at some point in this one. Assuming Tiote plays of course.

 

Tiote looks like he'll be missing this one as well. Bugger. Think we should go 4-3-3 and drop Cisse, who has done **** all for us so far this season. We need to show the players that no one is undroppable. Hell, why not start with Shola and have HBA and Marveaux/Obertan playing off him? Might work. Something needs to change though.

 

Make the game a bit easier if Fellaini got an early shower.

Hope Tiote doesn't get one.
