Now I'm pretty well up on most things computery. (Just invented a word I think. ) I had set up my Router for best performance yet still got drop outs at times. Now I know if I changed to 5 Ghz from 2.4 Ghz the wireless flew. But most of my wireless computers are 2.4 Ghz. I was averaging 15 to 20 Mb's download speeds on my laptop and E Pad, which isn't bad, but at times web pages were slow to load. Now I knew it wasn't Virgins fault as my hard wired computer was still flying. ( Well technically it was, as their software on the router set to auto, is supposed to use the least populated channel. ) Long story short, I did some research and downloaded WiFi Analyst for free from Android apps onto my phone. Wonderful software that does just what it says on the tin. Listed all the wireless networks in the neighbourhood around my house. Also what channels they are transmitting on. There were 4 others transmitting on the same channel as myself showing nearly as much signal strength as mine. With dozens round about the same channel. The App told me which channel was least used, I changed it in the settings for my router and bingo. Rechecked signal and there I was all on my lonesome. Now getting 60 Mb + download speeds and no drop outs. The App also has a signal meter which you can use to walk round your house to check signal strength. I found by trial and error I got nearly full signal all over the house, by moving my router just one foot further away from a surround sound speaker.
Or, in short, ekjgnvsdfnvlsns;pluhgalkg.sdlknsldfkbvsd!!! Sorry I know nothing about this stuff - but the android app appears quite useful (although I'm on Sky as I can;t get cable in my area!!)
Never had a Sky router marcus, but it should still have the option of which channel to use. I always stuff my phone with daft apps, more for the fun value than anything else. For a free app WiFi analyst is astounding and useful. You don't need to be on cable to make use of it, as it will lead you in the right direction for any wireless router. I have another couple of wireless routers lying about, which I disconnected when I got the VM super hub. I'm pretty sure they were faster than the hub with better signal distance, so I may stick one in and just use the hub as a modem.
Great I misnamed the app. It's WiFi ANALYZER. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farproc.wifi.analyzer&hl=en If you haven't got Google Play it is available on most of the apps sites. Don't forget if you use this while out and about, you can find OPEN WiFi points and just connect for free internet. There are loads around me. The actual 3 mobile internet on my phone is top class and flies. If you are limited by how much you can download on your contract, just piggyback the WiFi on any open network. This bloke is a yank but he explains most of it pretty well. On his there were only a couple of WIFis near him, there are dozens around me. But I was always connecting to channel six as well, so were a lot of others it seems, so moving up to 13 on my own solved my problem.
