After beating Venezuela 2 1 on Friday and absolutely battering Argentina last night but only drawing 1 1, Peru have climbed from bottom to 7th in the qualification group that involves all the South American countries, apart from Brazil who are hosts. Peru played with an energy, verve and skill against the Argies that MH would have been proud of. Messi was non-existent, he wasn't man marked, it was a zonal marking and most importantly Peru kept the ball much better and were first to it when the ball was lose, take note Rangers re. a certain Eden Hazard. If it hadn't been for a missed pen and a post Peru could have won comfortably. Having played 8 games and with 9 left if Peru can stay injury free and play as well as they've done in the last 2 games in the remainder the dream of a first qualification in 34 years could come true. Arriba Peru!!!! You Rssssssssssssssss A few lads came of age last night: Ramirez, Advincula, Cruzado, to name 3. Old stager Pizarro held the ball up well but missed the pen and just looks past his best, Farfan is real quality, we missed Guerrero who was injured against Venezuela.
Do Peru still play in the white shirt with a red band accross it? I always liked that shirt. Are you Peruvian or British?
They certainly do Finglas, it's a fantastic top. I was born in Peru of British parents, so I'm fortunate to be both! If Peru ever play England it will be tricky!
I will be in Argentina in January. Was thinking of visiting Lima. Is it safe, is it worth visiting? Good luck to Peru in the football.
Hi again, Lima is not high on the tourist trail. It is a huge city, lots of pollution, very humid but doesn't rain! I love it, but that's cos I was born and grew up there. Most tourists stay a night in Lima before heading off to explore the real beauty of Peru in places like Arequipa and Cusco. If you've only got a night, there are worse cities to spend it than Lima. There are some lovely spots on the coast where you can get a wonderful meal with a sea view. The historic centre of Lima has had a lot of care put into it in recent times and is worth a visit. You'd be coming at the right time if you like the heat, for most of the year Lima is covered in a low grey cloud, but come January and February the sun comes out, hope that helps!
Hope you get there Peruvian. Great memories of Peru in 1970. First World Cup i ever saw and when you played Brazil what a match that was. Cubillas is the player i always remember, tremendous. Good luck.
I thought that was something you put on crackers? Perv, I always presumed you were born and reared in the UK. Respect to you out there Bro!
I was in Peru in about 73 think it was - must have missed the last successful qualification games though. I hitch-hiked down from Ecuador looking for a beach - people there said there was plenty of beaches in Peru - they meant the f*kk*n Atacama Desert! People seemed a but miserable up there on the north west coast, but happier in Lima which I got to eventually, and spent a few days in. Went on by bus south and round the mountains,, it was rainy season, and back up by Lake Titicaca to Cusco, and then on to Machu Picchu, and then down into the Amazon valley. From Cusco back to Lima the "bus" went staright across the mountains which was an adventure as we had to stop and rebuild the road that had washed away! But I met some great people there - nearly ended up teaching English in Cusco, but the pay was *****. ! But I have shouted for Peru ever since - didn't they play Scotland in the 78 World Cup? Good luck with the Qualifiers!
Good luck Peruvian one, I hope they make it for you. I remember Peru in the World Cup Finals in 78 and 82? (Wasn't there a bit of a kerfuffle when they played Argentina or something? I was only a lad at the time.)
My favourite national kit of all time, fantastic team back in the days of the legends: Teofilo Cubillas etc. Always wanted to visit after reading Manuel Scorza's "Storia di Garabombo l'invisibile" back in the seventies! Those were the days, great football, great players and the hope of a glorious socialist revolution just round the corner. Sadly was not to be... Apologies to all those of the right or rather wrong persuasion.
I have the opportunity to go to Peru at the end of this year! Science related, rather than football! Anyway, good luck Peru!
There's always been a rumour that the military junta of Argentina paid their equivalent in Peru so that we'd let in the requisite number of goals so that Argentina would go through, also our goalkeeper at the time, Quiroga, was born in Argentina! It was a great time to grow up in Peru and we were really hopeful of doing well in '82 after drawing with Cameroon and Italy (who went on to win), we were 0 0 with Poland at half-time and then some bloke called Boniek scored a 2nd half hat-trick and we lost 5 0!!!! Cubillas = Legend!!!! For those who are interested here's the table after the last round of games, an uphill task still: POS EQUIPO PJ PG PE PP GF GC DG PTOS 1 Argentina 7 4 2 1 15 6 9 14 2 Colombia 7 4 1 2 12 6 6 13 3 Ecuador 7 4 1 2 8 7 1 13 4 Uruguay 7 3 3 1 15 11 4 12 5 Chile 7 4 0 3 12 13 -1 12 6 Venezuela 8 3 2 3 7 8 -1 11 7 Perú 7 2 1 4 9 13 -4 7 8 Bolivia 7 1 1 5 7 12 -5 4 9 Paraguay 7 1 1 5 5 14 -9 4
Hi Peruv, how ya doin? Our mutual friend spoke about his experiences last w/e. A changed young man so thanks for all of that.
You need to build some mega high altitude pitches for when Brazil and Argentina come your way, Bolivia have shown it can work!
Now that is a proper WC qualifying group! What is it Peruvian, top 4 through and 5 into a play off with another region? But it's brilliant, a continent wide competition, makes some of the European groups, and especially the Asian and Pacific ones ( sorry Kiwi, but Tahiti???) look pathetic. Plus we've got some real adventure seekers on here. South America in the seventies Jock? Respect! And if you get the chance, go YoungOne. Hope the GCSEs went well.
