I saw David Coulthard doing the walk along the start line immediately before a Grand Prix a few weeks back, looking for drivers to have a few words with. It was painful to watch, he couldn't find any of the drivers and he just wandered up and down looking like a twat. Martin Brundle never had that trouble.
Live sport is leaps and bounds better than televised commentary sport, the whole point of going is to support your team but also enjoy the atmosphere the stadium gives, I like tennis but up untill last week I had only watched it on the tv, being in the courts at the Olympics was an experience
Coulthard and Brundle together in the commentary box was even more painful, neither of them knew when to dumb it down for new or casual viewers. I'd have preferred Brundle to be the one to stay in the commentary box with Coulthard as a pundit, but the new guy brings a better balance to it and most importantly does that without being James Allen. I think the most annoying thing was that with the two drivers there you'd have expected them to be pretty good at working out the strategy, but it took them 4 or 5 drivers doing it to work out why 11th or 12th place kept choosing to start on harder tyres when the front runners were on the softer ones (generally trying to reduce the number of pitstops by making the 1st and 2nd stints longer due to the harder rubber and then the track being more rubbered in for the softer on a lighter fuel load).
i cannot look at David Coulthard without seeing Quagmire from Family Guy. Its like the 'imagining presenting to everyone when they are naked except for socks' tip, but if you see him as Quagmire (assuming you know who Quagmire is), then Coulthard becomes entertaining. I just wish he'd say 'Gigg-ity Gigg-ity' at least once!!!
I agree F1 is not the same without Murray Walker at the helm. I hate the new sky coverage its crap and wooden. BBC with Jake Humphrey and Eddie Jordan with Coulthard are the best watch around. Always watch BBC F1 when its Live. Even the highlights programme on BBC gets more viewers than when sky do it Live. I wonder why ? As for the football last night, I muted the tv and had the radio commentary on. Far better.
I couldn't watch football on TV with no commentary. It'd be like watching that To Hull and Back episode of Only Fools and Horses, which has no canned laughter. It's just not right.
I completely agree that the BBC coverage of F1 is much better than Sky, but the higher viewing figures even for highlights would be obvious as the BBC has a much wider viewer reach than Sky does.
I wish i clicked on the CBBC commentary during the Euros , did anyone have a listen ? who was commentating on the games ??? Tinky Winky and Laa laa
I think if you're watching a match on the TV, commentators are needed. Not that you don't know who the players are, but they give you that extra insight, the information such as, "This team hasn't won here for x amount of years" or "Sonso has gone 18 games without a goal". Rather pointless but I find them quite interesting sometimes. They also prevent it from being boring as hell, can you imagine watching a Barcelona game on TV without commentators. Just the football being played. It's awful. Next time you watch a match on the tele, turn your volume on mute. It's agonisingly ****e.
..and do you like to be told by some B list ex-pro that when he played, it was never like that, the number of players that make up a back 4 and other such information that a spectator has their own consciousness to decide upon. I d also question the value of knowing the quality of the pies, the route taken to the ground and bets on who is going to score the first goal Bring back the Motson and Coleman styled commentary
