First of all, congratulations on regaining Premiership status. Early days yet, things will get better I'm sure. Swans fan, live in the USA last 5 years. Over for a few days in November and hoping to take in the Southampton V Swansea game on the 10th Nov. Where's the best place to park considering I have to get back to London that night? Best football game I ever saw was at the Dell November 1991, Southampton 3 Man U 5, George Best scored his last hat trick for Man U, still have the program. Ok sorry you lost that day but what a game, also held the Golden Boot that Bobby Stokes scored with to win the FA Cup Final. He had a pub near Portsmouth that I went into once and recognized him after playing Cricket down there against a team called the Cormorants and he let me hold the boot, cool huh. My old friend D J Read from Keyhaven and college Caerleon, I would love to hear from you if you ever look on this. Sam. Yeah in the USA. Go on this board or the Swansea board. Leave a message. And after all that, where do I park? Looking forward to a great game and my first visit to St Mary's. Best wishes Saint's fans and good luck.
If you don't mind a 15 minute walk then you can park in Woolston under the Itchen Bridge for free and walk over the bridge to the ground. Another option is the Park and Ride in Bursledon. This has the benefit that when you get back to your car you are on junction 8 of the M27 motorway so it's easy to get on the M3 for London. I do not know how much it costs though. If you need more details let me know and I'll find out for you.
NJS has got his years mixed up. It was the 1971/72 season that Best stitched us up like kippers, like NJS I was there to witness his brilliance. I can remember one goal where he dummied Big John McGrath on the edge of the 6yd box and calmly passed it into the other corner, genius.
There's not a lot of parking around St Marys, but the ground isn't far from the city centre and there are plenty of pubs/bars/shops to spend time in. The roads in Southampton can be quite hellish shortly before and after the game, so if time really is of the essence, you might consider ditching the car down-track and taking the train? Still, the traffic isn't 'forced to take a slash in your car' bad, so you will be fine if your brief is to be back in London in the Evening. You might miss the Start of the X Factor though. Enjoy the match (not too much though!).
The only time I saw George Best was when he appeared for Fulham. My Dad built the game up all week as Fulham also had Bobby Moore and Rodney Marsh in the team. Best got sent off after about 20 minutes!
I was at that game too. I also saw Best play at Aberdeen for ManU in 1972 and Hibs around 1980. I wish I`d seen him at his best though. .
Salisbury street car park is good for London at end of the avenue and 20 min walk to the ground. Few good pubs there too!
OOOPS yes 1971 typo error. Thanks for all your help and suggestions. The park and ride at Bursledon sounds good. Good luck this weekend, so unlucky against Man U.
If you Google Radcliffe Road, and can find your way to it there are a couple of Garages with parking slots for £5 or £6 a session. Need to get there quite early but it is only a few minutes walk to the Stadium.
South West Trains from Waterloo £37 day return. Drops u at the Southampton central which is a 15 minute walk to the ground. Runs twice an hour, journey time about 1hour 20minutes. Check first. Cheers
