Correct me if I'm wrong Eamo, but isn't the UK Mail a notorious Tory paper that's certainly to the right of things? The reason I ask is because the Daily Mail here in Ireland is the complete opposite, IE left-leaning, liberal and an altogether great read. All the other papers with British variants eg The Sun, The Mirror etc are just sister papers with an Irish office.

The Mail, however, seems to be the total opposite of what you guys get over there. Unusual.

The Mail is read primarily by females and right wing (lower)middle class men which is where the majority of the Tory vote comes from so you are correct Swords.

Yep. It's the same in America as well, The Republicans get the majority of the Female vote.

More females turn out for voting than men that is why the Government (in particular Labour) are desperate to get the voter turnout % higher.

    The general/traditional voting trends are:

    - Females tend to vote Tory
    - The South East (South in general) tends to vote Tory
    - The North East (North in general) tends to vote Labour
    - Working Class tend to vote Labour
    - Middle/Upper class tend to vote Tory
    - Ethnic Minorities/Immigrants tend to vote Labour

Cheers DL, that's a handy breakdown there.

The Northerners are more Labour, huh? One thing I noticed during the Euro's was that every fan I heard interviewed, had a southern accent. Maybe the northerners don't feel they're part of mainstream England or summat? I don't know.

The female thing is interesting (insert joke here). I would have thought, if anything, they'd be more Liberal considering how they was put down for so long. Pity that.

Amazingly, very few people actually buy a newspaper because of it's political leanings...

That's very true. I buy The Sun every day even though its a Murdoch-owned reactionary rag. But you just can't beat it for sport (and page 3 and the Agony Aunt :emoticon-0111-blush). The rest of its pure trash and I don't even go back as far as the middle page. My missus buys the Irish Mail which is a very good newspaper with proper Journalists.

The main reason would be price, I would imagine Sooper (isn't it always). Handiness aswell - I hate Broadsheets. The supplements also might be a consideration.

What's the lefty paper over there? The Standard?

There's a huge divide here. Northerners detest Southerners, this can be traced back mainly to Thatcher in particular when the Tory Government pumped in a lot of money into the South will little (if any) going to the North, as a result the North (in particular the North East) was hit harder than most re: unemployment when Thatcher waged war on the working class.

There is a lot of misportrayal in the media about both which has led to prejudices on both counts. Northerners are/were portrayed as poor, unkempt, less educated and working class whilst Southerners are/were portrayed as "flash with the cash", posh, middle/upper class. Recently a lot of money has been pumped into the regeneration of the North and it's every bit as good as down South in terms of lifestyle.

Many Northerners/Midlanders (same thing) I have met genuinely don't believe poverty/struggle exists down South when arguably its worse. The only real difference between North and South is that down South the gap between rich and poor is far wider. Down my road at one end we have a family that owns a Bentley, Black A4 and BMW X5, that family are on a 7 figure salary (at least) between them, down the same road or one road away there are people struggling to make ends meet (barely on 20-25k between a couple). I don't think you'd get kind of divide up North but I could be wrong <ok>

If you went to Liverpool or worse the North East and held up an effigy of Thatcher it would be The equivalent of going into India and ordering a Big Mac. They absolutely hate Thatcher and the Tories <laugh>

Liverpool as a city has always been traditionally left wing, but there's a lot of history behind that which I won't go into, I've gone off topic enough as it is <yikes>

I don't vote, but have only voted for Lib Dems in the past. Don't buy papers, read what I want online. What does this make me DL?

I thought of our COLIN then <laugh>

Its a shame Thatcher fu*ked the North so badly. I believe she particularly detested Liverpool. That said, with an accent like that, could you blame her?

Do the Northerners put the West Country and East Anglia in the same bracket or do they feel that they're more like them?

Are you under 30? They reckon a higher % of the Lib Dem vote comes from Students and under 30s. Of course People do buck against the trend.

Despite being an immigrant of the 50s my Uncles have always voted Tory, now being an ethnic minority, male, relatively poor, working class and being in a traditonally Labour Stronghold (Ealing) that completely bucks against the trend.

    I guess you are... Unique LB&B :D

Yeah she hated Liverpool. She practically tore the city apart limb from limb and was advised to actually abandon Liverpool as a whole, that's where the "We're not English, we're Scouse" comes from partly. L

The M25 is seen as the invisible line between North and South. Anything above Watford is considered North (to a Southerners), to a northerner anything below Birmingham is South. East Anglia is considered South to most Northerners/Midlanders I know anyway
