Now whilst I am fully aware that depression is no laughing matter, and I would never usually attempt to find any mirth in someone's battle against such an illness, I couldn't help wondering to myself whether the expectations of the Koo Pee Arr lot who tried to tell us how this guy is a potential world-beater have weighed all too heavily on this fella's shoulders. Do you think the Premier League will give them special dispensation to go out and buy a load more overpriced midfielders to make up for his loss?

For the record I hope he's ok and makes a full recovery, I know people who have suffered from depression and it's not pretty.

Darren Eadie, as an ex-sufferer, has done much to raise awareness of depression in football - and sport in general in recent times. He was on BBC radio 5 live on August bank holiday in a candid and revealing interview with Stephen Nolan.

It must be even harder for solo sportsmen, such as tennis and snooker players, as they are largely on their own, in hotel rooms, in far flung parts of the world. At least 'team' players have "mates" in whom they can confide if they choose to. But sadly, few do - admitting you have depression carries a similar stigma to "coming out" and admitting you are gay, in many people's eyes.

Cedric Anselin (ex NCFC) was found by his wife, who came home early, with the noose already in position round his neck - a tragedy narrowly and miraculously avoided <ok>

Surely they won't give them dispensation. Its no different from being injured really. Sad but with the amount of personnel in football, the law of averages says they will be susceptible to all the ills and woes that affect us leeser mortals.

I'm certain they won't either, that bit was my attempted 'mirth' which I fully appreciate was rubbish and almost entirely innappropriate so apologies to anyone if they think I'm taking the piss out of this situation.

It can affect anyone. It's not about money and the assumption therefore that they have a good life.

Tell that to the self employed or small business owners struggling to meet a pay-roll every week and keep the banks off our backs! <ok>

But there could be a death in Diakite's family or something similar. It's not always about the money.

From personal experience, try going through a divorce with the woman you truly loved! I won't go in to details but the following 7 months were nothing short of horrific.

But the symptoms can lead to other illnesses and phobias and depression is not normally the only issue going on in the "victim". I also suffered from agoraphobia for several months too. I had to go to the shops etc to buy food (I had no choice) but each time I did the pain of seeing "happy families" was unbearable and would simply breakdown in the middle of Tesco's!. Unless you have actually suffered from depression, there is no way you can possibly understand the illness.

The first weekend away from my family, and being a keen fisherman, I chose to go for a quiet walk along the banks of a local river (in January). I even contemplated jumping in to end it all! This is where the agoraphobia came about, I was so scared to venture out of doors in case I had any further suicidal tendencies.

Some people will make light of the condition and this is mainly down to ignorance and macho pride. Should it ever happen to these same people they will never see the world the same way again, I can promise that.

It was not until 2 1/2 years after the initial separation that I really got my life back together. At 7 months, life started to improve through circumstances but that was not the end of it. It truly is a serious issue and if this guy is depressed he could well be out of action for some considerable time.

I naturally have a tremendous amount of sympathy for the guy. He will come out the other end I am sure. He will probably never be the same person again and that may or may not be a good thing, depends how it comes out of it.

I don't think anyone would see it as piss taking. His misfortune is just another scene in the QPR farce which is making the rest of football laugh.

Really pleased you added this post. I kept well away when I saw your OP as, for reason posted above by myself, I thought it was likely to light a fuse with some people. Well done <applause>

    Probably not in my lifetime!

Am I right in thinking that Norfolk has the fewest miles of dual-carriageway in the country?

The A11 is deliberately single carriageway at that point for the border crossing checkpoint. A dual carriageway would be difficult to police.
