News has finally emerged of why Diakite is unfit to play, he's suffering from depression. I don't think he will return anytime soon. article
    Below:

Queens Park Rangers midfielder Samba Diakite has returned home to France to battle depression.
It is unclear what has triggered the problem, but Rangers will give the 23-year-old as much time he needs to recover.

The Mali man started QPR's first two Premier League matches but missed last weekend's clash against Manchester City without any explanation.

It is thought Diakite was given 10 days leave after the 1-1 draw at Norwich on August 25. However, 13 days after going to France, he is yet to return.

It is unclear whether Diakite will be available for the clash against Chelsea a week on Saturday.

QPR's club doctor has made regular trips across the channel to check on the midfielder, who is on a specially devised fitness regime in France.

Hughes made Diakite one of his first signings as manager in January - and he played a key role in the club's top-flight survival last season while on loan. QPR paid £3.5million for Diakite in the summer.

His case further highlights the problem of depression among footballers. The Professional Footballers' Association sent a booklet on how to handle the illness to their members last season.

Depressed on 40-odd K per week? WTF?

Did Hughes not know about this before he signed him?

Very sorry to hear that. Must be difficult for a player as anti-depressants would no doubt affect performance as well as being a pile of ****e anyway. Talking therapy is probably the way but that would be best in his native language (French?) and with someone with an understanding of his culture back home. QPR's team doctor is hardly ideal in that case.

Yes, people can be depressed and worse on thousands a week.

don't think we'll see him again for a long time. I can't imagine this is a quick fix.

C'mon swords don't pin this one on MH....in the majority of cases there are no signs and I don't think it's a question on their medical checklist.

Probably better and cheaper to pay for a decent therapist. There's some really bad stuff going on in Mali right now, for all we know his family and relatives could have major problems.

That said just seeing a photo of MH depresses me.

Although some people percieve depression as a weakness, I don't think it is something to be scoffed at. I have no experience of it but realise that it is a mental illness and it can hit anyone at anytime regardless of wealth, social standing, ability or age etc. I hope he gets better asap.

It does beg the question though? Is this why he missed the end of last season and played so poorly in our first two games of this season?

Purely for footballing reasons, but if this is the case then why did we sign him and why is he in the twenty five?

This isn't going to go-away anytime soon.

As Nines says, he missed the end of last season probably for the same reasons. If there was any inkling that this was a problem then he should never have been signed. Of course, the player himself might not have been very open and honest either. He signs a three (?) year contract and a couple of weeks later he's back in his homeland not able to play?

Either Hughes has made another error of judgement or the boy himself is a liar.

The idea that you think money is the answer to depression makes me depressed.

if MH had a policy to only sign players who could never be susceptible to depression, he wouldn't be signing human beings.

Purely for selfish QPR reasons I agree with you Swords. It seems like a bit of a cock up. I've never known QPR to do this before? ! ? ! ?

But for the lad himself, I wish him all the best. The understanding of mental illness is still in it's infancy in modern society.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_northern_Mali_conflict

This all kicked off after the end of the fighting in Libya. Mali and Mauritania have always had ethnic problems between their light skinned northerners and Black African majority. The history of slavery is very recent, it still exists despite being outlawed in Mauritania in 1981.

Haven't lived in Mali but have lived very close by in West Africa many years ago.

    No wonder Diakite is depressed.

What I'm asking is, did he not have an inkling that he had this problem before he signed him? And did the player himself not let it be known to Management that he suffered from this condition, prior to signing the contract?

Depression affects 1 in 4 persons and is becoming more problamatic due to families being dispersed over vast distances, the ease at which drugs are given to deal with the problem rather than CBT due to cost implications. Depression is also seen in many developing countries as an excuse (not a real illness) and is therefore a person from a developing country will not openly admit to this or see this as a problem until it is too late, which could be the case here. Understanding the root cause(s) of his depression will enable him to build coping mechanisms and aid him in the future.

Best of luck to him and hope to see him kicking lumps out of the opposition sooner than later.

How would he have an inkling that he had depression?

Diakite himself was probably suffering from it and soldiering on, not really admitting that there was a problem even to himself let alone his employers.

I bet he was. Soldiered on until the ink was just about dry.

You were probably one of the ones who said Joey Barton was a changed man when he signed for us an' all. <doh>
