Bollox. So who did win the competitions in the first 50 years of the league, someone had to and all clubs were less then 50 years old? On age, Chelsea were formed in 1905 and became a league club shortly afterwards, we weren't even a league club till 1908 - playing in the southern league before then. Just a basic look on wiki tells you there is no head start here. Admittedly we won the cup once as a non league club (1901), but we are newer to the football league than you are.
For the first 50 years of league football, Sunderland, Arsenal and Aston Villa ruled the roost in terms of league titles. Wolves were top dogs in the 50's, No real stand out top dogs in the 60's (though an Argument could be made for Man Utd), Liverpool ruled the 70's, Liverpool and Everton battled it out in the 80's, then its been Man Utd ever since really.
I would be willing to bet that out of the 96 Football League Clubs alone, most didn't win anything in their first 50 years of existence.
Not really. We went 50 years without winning the league. You've just broken our record... 51 years and counting
There is a generation of Spurs fans who have never seen their team win at Stamford Bridge (or Old Trafford even), possibly 2/3 that have never seen them win the league. I suppose at least our fans have been rewarded for their patience. I don't see Spurs ever winning it in my lifetime but then again I used to say the same for us as well.
Enlighten me then. The point is the league was formed in 188? and for 50 years someone had to win the competions. If it takes 50 years to win a competition, who won them in the first 50 years. Equally I made the point that our 2 clubs started at very similar times, as you suggested we had a head start ("we are a much less older club". Now, what did I misunderstand/misread?
Fair comparison but your own criterion was 'major trophies' (excluding the 'mickey-mouse cup' for some reason).
Spurs were formed in 1882 but the football league didnt start until 1889. Spurs didnt win their first title till 1951 (took them 62 years to win their first title). Chelsea joined the football league in 1908 and won their first league title in 1955 (took 47 years to win our first title)
I repeat my point, in 1889 who won the league? Whoever they they were, they weren't 50 years old. It clearly didn't take that team (Preston, Accrington Stanley or whoever) 50 years to win the league. Also, why has it suddenly become about league titles, we were talking about all competitions. Although we were formed in 1882, we didn't join the league until 1908, we were non league till then and that was after you joined the league.
Ahh okay, I am not boned up on Spurs history tbh, I assumed as you had been formed before the league that you had been in it from the start, my apologies. Oh and it was Preston who won the first league title in 1889 (and the second in 1890)
