Contracts these days mean F all.. just means their price goes up if they want to leave - nothing more

Whatever the contract, the player must be happy playing for us. You can not chain a player to a club, and we do not need to. Fab and RVP were two players we, for different reasons relied way too much upon. The history has taught us that it was not healthy. This is a more important lesson to learn than these contract issues.

So they don't mean f all then.

They mean we get more money to replace the player leaving and, knowing us, pay off some debt. Is that not a good thing?

Song had 3 years left on his contract and still ****ed off when Barca flirted with him. I think we are going to have to offer our best players good deals to keep them. That is the world that we are dealing with.

I hope we sort out Arteta's contract, he took a wage cut to join and I doubt he was on amazing wages at Everton, anyway. He deserves it and he has become a key senior figure in the squad.

    <ok> Agree.

It looks as though we are trying to negotiate some new contracts with our existing players, and Arteta is one that deserves a decent one.

Blame Bosman, that's the biggest single change in football in the last 20 years and the reason why crazy long contracts have to be offered to potentially good players or when they become decent players they're lured by the $$$$ and leave on a free.
You get some right (Cesc) you get some wrong (Denilson) but managers are forced to take chances.
For the record, RVP was asked to engage in new contract discussions in August 2011 which of course he decline and now we know why, this was 2 years before his last contract expired and highlights what managers are up against....
