So Owen has joined Stoke, Klasnic has joined Mainz, Drogba is still with the Chinese team. But Del Piero, yes he is older, yes he isn't an answer for the long haul but can he come in and help us in attack? I think it is a resounding yes. There are tons of different ways you can look at the positives in this, a guy who has been there, done that, won that, a legend who knows all about club loyalty as well. Someone that could really give everyone a lift as his name still holds plenty of weight. Even though he wasn't playing as mcuh last year he still was getting on the scoresheet. He is personally one of my all-time favorite strikers and I think his addition would be awesome. It would also probably help the spriits and play of Borini who is struggling a bit at the moment and what better mentor to have around than Del Piero. Thoughts? If Lucas Barrios is out there I would say go for him, but if not then there is nothing wrong with trying for Del Piero at least on a year long deal.
was about to post this too. Sky Italia running the story that we've asked him to put his move to Sydney on hold to hear our offer. TBH he will be 38 in November, bit old? But then again, we should pay his wages just to act as a coach to the bloody team! Him playing could be seen as an excellent extra
According to Wikipedia he was born in the same year an month as Scholes, and he still does a job for United
I'd be less embarrassed with us signing Del Piero then I would be us signing Heskey or Owen and we need a striker so I say yes... go for it
We would not be calling on him every weekend as well, but options nonetheless. I think his status would be just a massive lift to everyone involved. He can poach as well that is for sure. Hell, his shirt sales alone would cover any and all payments we would make to him. I just think he is class so would be overjoyed at this, again, for this year as that is probably all he could give.
Hate to offer some realism to this discussion, but the odds on our board snapping up Del Piero in a year long deal on wages probably around 75k-100k a week when they wouldn't even consider Dempsey, a 29 year old in his prime as one of the leagues leading goal scorer....yeah...I'd be surprised
Dempsey would probably be close to those wages over 4 years give or take. Del Piero would be just 1. I know it is short term and they have said " no short term solutions" but they have to realize they kind of stitched up Rodgers and we need some cover. All Rodgers needs to do is talk shirt sales and it could go through. $_$
Barrios would be my first choice but Del Piero is not a bad shout at all. I also thought we might have shown an interset in Klasnic.
Ya I thought so with klasnic as well. Would have liked to see him in a good team. He is at Mainz now and I think Barrios would be a great shout, even if we got Del Piero, but really don't know the full ins and outs of his contract sitaution in China. Del Piero, such a legend.
Yes, but another team that is having some weird ownership financial issues so could be on a free soon. Plus with Del Piero, it could get all the lads closer to winning a trophy and celebrating with Lebron James in Vegas!
He is but he is not getting a game and he said he hates it over there, apparently he is being a dick and the Chinese club want to cancel his contract. Or something like that
Del boy scored 3 goals in 23 league games for Juve last season. His best years are far behind him unfortunately.
If Del Piero can score say 5 goals but his presence and mentoring help Borini get at least 10 then it will be 100% worth it for me.
Didn't he sign with Sydney not to long ago? "This is huge for Sydney FC, huge for the A-League and huge for Australian football," Sydney FC chairman Scott Barlow said. "We feel honoured that Alessandro has decided to play for Sydney FC and we share his excitement that a move to Sydney FC will create a lasting legacy for football in this country."
Easy decision that! He is one of those guys I feel that just him being around makes others want to work that much harder to even try and achieve half the things he has. Lets be honest here as well, how many winners do we have on the team? Carra is, Gerrard is, Reina is ( bit out of form but knows what it takes), Suarez is. After that there is really hardly anyone who was won something signifigant. I think someone with that winners mentality will provide a lot to the team. As you can tell, I am a fan of Del Piero.
