Do you know who the drivers' representative was this weekend? Sure he mustn't have had a say in that particular incident.

I do think that there have been some very poor decisions today.

Also, apparently there was a GP2 incident which was worse than the Grosjean incident. Was this true? I haven't watched the races yet. Surely the penalties should apply to the GP2, GP3 & WSBR as well

It does seem like a very harsh penalty, but I guess this is the FIA saying enough is enough.

I still can't really see why Grosjean even ended up in that situation. He went trough a couple of acres of clear space to find somebody to drive in to. Clumsy at best.

I love how two of them managed to crash on Kemmel, the stewards will be working late into the night when these guys get promoted to F1.

Grosjean probably got the ban for not owning up to it <doh>

It was clumsy and borderline negligent, but the biggy is the fact that it was inches away from being a potential fatal with Alonso, thats why he's probably got the ban.

I'd bet that Alonso's undies needed to be burned after that one... He was a couple of feet away from losing his head. Scary stuff.

Pit lane, there was next to no room for Lewis to move to, did you see where Grosjean came from and the huge amount of empty space that he could of pulled into. Lewis would of been on the grass and probably didnt see him coming coming into him. The ban was for what could of happened, as said, Alonso as lucky, 2ft the other way and he wouldnt have a head left.

Hopefully they'll remember this every time someone veers across the track in future races then.

The point is that there were several strange incidents at the start: Maldonado jumping the lights, Grosjean's wild change of direction, and Hamilton's lack of reaction to a car coming across him. I find it hard to believe that the 5 week break between races is not a factor in any or all of these, so a portion of the blame goes to the FIA.

Similarly, I was surprised at the stewards investigating the Schumacher/Vettel incident when it is obvious to the rest of us that (though we love Spa) it is the position of the pit lane entry to blame...

It was not a racing incident. Grosjean was not forced to swerve into Hamilton. The track was not greasy or wet. There was no mechanical intervention that caused the incident. It happened because Grosjean turned his steering wheel into Hamilton's car. I entirely understand that Grosjean thought he had more space or thought that he had passed Hamilton but it does not change the fact that Grosjean was in control of his car and made it happen.

Also, the incident has got nothing to do with when Grosjean could/couldn't break. Grosjean pushed Hamilton onto the grass which meant that Lewis lost control of the car which caused the incident. It is entirely Grosjean's fault.

Yes. It meant he gained an unfair advantage. Whether he had the chance to use this advantage is neither here nor there.

    Yes he has

If I try to steal something or to kill someone, it is immaterial whether I succeed. I would still go to jail. Why should this be any different? The whole point of rules is that they are unambiguous and clear. The resulting effect of the crime does not dictate whether it is classed as breaking the law/rules.

So he did deserve a penalty then. Again, if I committed a crime and was given community service, do you think I would get out of it if I was ill or broke my leg? No, it would be carried forward until I was able to serve it. You can't apply a drive through if someone is no longer in the race. Therefore, a grid drop for the next race is the alternative option in the rule book.

Let's step back for a minute here. This isn't about denying the drivers from racing or denying viewers their entertainment.

This is about safety and making sure the sport does everything it can to prevent injuries in the sport. I think that's more important than anything else. <ok>

Totally agree with this... He should have been on to the boffins at MTC as soon as Grosjean got within 50 feet of him to beam him up. Clearly avoidable.

One other point... A 5 week break has nothing to do with it. They manage to come back after a winter break and still remember how to drive. Grosjean was clumsy, end of. It's not the first time but hopefully it's the last.

The ban was for what could of happened, as said, Alonso as lucky, 2ft the other way and he wouldnt have a head left.

    1. Grosjean veers across track, hitting Hamilton's tyre and causing suspension failure.
    2. Hamilton loses control, swerves onto grass and back, hitting the back of Grosjean.
    3. Grosjean catapulted into the back of Peres and goes airborne.
    4. Grosjean lands on Alonso, narrowly missing his head.

Is the penalty for action 1, or action 4, or what could have happened, or any combination of the above?

OK, but it will come to a point where drivers will not want to overtake incase they cause an avoidable accident. All Motor-Sports have incidents and what the Stewards don't realise is that there will be crashes at some point and they should not come to dramatic conclusions because the smallest incident has occurred.

I totally do not agree with the penalty... But I don't think it was down to this one incident alone, I think it's an attempt to make Grosjean a little bit more aware on starts.

It was a daft move, since he took himself out of an otherwise safe place and opted for a massive pileup, but certainly not race ban worthy on it's own. I feel a bit sorry for him really, but he does need to get his head together when it comes to starts.

Action 1. Where was Lewis meant to go???? The rest were a consequences of Grosjeans actions. Grosjean Totally ****ed up, and was lucky that his consequences didnt kill a fellow driver, but hey, F1 is a dangerous sport. <ok>
