The England international only completed a switch to Loftus Road earlier this summer, linking up with QPR as a free agent after seeing his deal run down at West Ham.

He was quickly installed as Hughes' number one, but has now seen that position come under threat from another new arrival.

Brazilian shot-stopper Julio Cesar has been snapped up from Inter Milan and a man with a UEFA Champions League winners' medal to his name is expected to be handed an immediate starting berth.

That will leave Green benched just a matter of weeks into his QPR career, and Hughes appreciates that the 32-year-old may want to go in search of regular games elsewhere.

He said: "That isn't my concern. That may concern Rob in terms of his international standing but from my point of view I have got to make sure we are strong as a club.

"If in the future any of my keepers came to me and said they felt their future lay elsewhere then we can have a conversation about that and make a decision that benefitted everyone.

"But at the moment it's early days and the challenge is there for all my keepers.

"It's a difficult situation for Rob but the opportunity to bring in Julio Cesar came very quickly and it's one that we felt as a club we couldn't ignore.

"On a football level and a business level, we needed to do it because you don't get opportunities like that very often."

Why wasn't Cerny on the bench yesterday? Injured?

Could go in January? I'd have said that it's a racing certainty!

That was the first time I remember seeing Green play reasonably all right yesterday. He didn't even look scared sh*tless. Perhaps the competition is good for him!

Be interesting to know what Green was told when he came to us. I should think he feels let down right now, but he's not got the Kenny-Barton mentality of moaning about it.

He left West Sham because we were giving him a few bob extra. Nowte wrong with that, its just business. But so is being pushed onto the bench by a better player.

I'm sure the Hammers fans have a wry smile on their faces. All's fair in love and war.

A total nothing article. If any keeper said they want to go then they have s conversation. It's the same for any player. MH has nothing to apologise for. We hire a player to join the club and agree terms. Unless those terms state you are guaranteed a start you fight for your place against the crop of other players the club choose to employ regardless of your position. If (when!) we get Messi do you think Cisse or Zamora etc will feel put out cos someone better has come along?

I think he will go in January unless Cesar turns out to be even worse

Hughes said that he will look to loan Murphy out after Cesar signed I remember. So Green will be 2nd choice, then Cerny 3rd.

At the moment Cerny's number four. Its a bit of a climb down from being most people's preferred number one in January.

From the title of this thread, I was (almost) expecting a bloke with a crooked smile to leap up and say, "Opportunity Knocks" (though perhaps not for poor old Rob!).

For those less than 45 years old you may need to use google.

He was better, although I recall the commentator saying several times for corners & free kicks, "Robert Green go for the ball".
