While we are waiting for Eastbourne: Long trial for Charlton. including several reserve games, but at 29 it was decided he was too old and not good enough to be offered a permanent contract. But three years later captained his country to a draw with Germany in the finals of the European Championship and ten years after his spell at Charlton was still playing top class football including the European competitions. Most capped European player of all time.
Vitalijs Astafjevs but to be fair Eddie... after he left us in 2000 he did join Bristol Rovers... didn't he score a goal against us for them?
I was born in Forest Gate I had two separate spells at I am a Goalkeeper I made 9 first team appearances
Born in Woolwich, grew up in Eltham League debut against Northampton Town at 18 Only one team after leaving Charlton and Captained them to FA Cup glory. Managed Millwall. Ooops Sorry Eastborne me bad
Very good player and lovely guy. Stayed at Bristol Rovers getting kicked to death in the fourth tier through their worst ever years out of pure loyalty. (Bit of a throwback to earlier decades). Maybe not top tier standard but would have thrived in the Championship. Must have had the worst agent in soccer.
You'll need a long memory for this one... A left back, signed on loan from QPR. Made his debut vs. Birmingham City in 83-84. Damaged his knee after an hour and was carried off, never to be seen again. Subsequently played for Hendon. Managed St Alban's FC, then left for a career coaching in The States. A fine cricketer, he once put on over 100 in a third wicket stand with Tewkes and was heavily fined by QPR for turning up for training with a broken finger after being hit while batting.
Out of respect to Tweaks I will not discuss that game Mary As it happens I used to play for Sidcup CC at about the same time that Tweaks used to play for Dartford/Sevenoaks Vine/Bexleyheath? but I have seen the light since then
Ye gods, that was good, AllHell. Never knew you played at the same time as me - I played for Wilmington then Bexleyheath. Played with Martin Duffield at Beddington and Wallington. Very good eye for a bad ball. My cousin, Arthur Davies, built the pavilion at Park View.
I played for Sidcup between(ish) 75 to 82ish then went on to my old school team Old Roan for about 5 years... then realised that I enjoyed the drinking and curries after more than the cricket plus I was missing some Charlton games due to Saturday games. Since then I have fallen out of love with Cricket I used to play against Derek Underwood's brother... daft really.... a spinner who used to bowl at medium slow and turn the ball 45deg
One for Eddie Played over 500 games for Charlton, 4 off them in goal plus starting other games in defence, midfield and attack His first cap for Scotland was the first time he had set foot in the Country
The benefits of having a Scottish dad. That and black pudding for breakfast! I have over 100 international caps. I can include Inter and Lazio as former clubs. You still chant my name to this day, though not in my honour.
