Same here. Last time he qualified well, he had a horrible start and got swallowed up by the pack.

no i got it wrong.jenson had the new wing, lewis the old one.but he could have had the new one too.so there was more than 1.
but these are the only times when jenson can get to outqualify lewis.it normally takes something to go wrong for lewis in quali fir button to outquali him.
well done to button tho,its just a shame lewis didnt use the new wing too.and with his lack of straight line speed,he will be lucky to get any points tomorrow.

"Jenson has the new rear wing on, I have the old. We voted to change, didn't work out. I lose 0.4 tenths just on the straight. "

Tut tut, do you really believe what you write? Lewis confirmed that in practise he couldn't ge the NEW to work so he decided no to use it. He pointed out that he was surprised that Jenson had manage to get I working.

Hamilton is going to be a sitting duck if it's dry tomorrow. If it rains, he's a certainty for the win. More downforce = more wet grip.

    A very interesting line-up.
I hope today's action is at least some compensation for the lack of it yesterday – especially for
SilverArrow, who was somewhere out there under a brolly (I hope).

As has been said earlier in the thread (I've just read the last couple of pages ;)), Button is looking very strong indeed. When he gets things going well, he is capable of something which leaves other drivers gasping. However, I feel that the lack of running was ultimately la source of McLaren's calculated gamble in doing very different things with their cars. My understanding is that Hamilton (who loves Spa and is very good here) chose not to use he new rear wing – and that it was available to him. It may well be that the old rear wing is fundamentally unsuited to the new bodywork but with so little running, it may have been difficult to be sure.

I think it quite possible that Alonso will do better in the race: his pace during this morning's practice was pretty convincing on each of the three (I think) fuel loads he ran, thus demonstrating the car's all-round ability, as well as his own – which few people seriously doubt.

    Surprises:
On the positive side, Button notwithstanding, Kobayashi has every right to wear the widest grin. I hear that he was unaware of the fact that he is the first Japanese driver to claim a front row spot. Maldonado too, but somehow I think we're more used to seeing impressive qualifying from him.

The biggest negative surprise for me was Rosberg. Save for some disaster, it is difficult to think that his weekend could have been much worse. He now needs to use his new gearbox and badly timed effort in qualifying as an opportunity to show what he can do when under the kosh. Obviously, regardless of perhaps a rather weak driver line-up, the Mercedes is looking poor. It seems that by mid-term, they are already consumed by the peloton, which is reminiscent of Brawn GP but in a bigger way. I reckon the Mercedes has gone back probably to 5th best car, but of course, unlike Button at Brawn, neither of the Mercedes drivers are looking likely to threaten for the title.

Another negative surprise was Hamilton claiming such a lowly slot. However, I should add that I am not surprised to see McLaren doing only half a job again.

    Enjoy the race tomorrow.

P.S. to Silver: keep your brolly handy for the odd shower. It may not happen during the F1 race, but I'm certain there will be a couple of heavy showers during the day.

beating the previous record held by Maldonado 5 weeks ago? Glad he's been moved back, makes me think Kobay has a good chance to survive the first corner. Although last tiem he had a good quali he didn't start badly, but got blocked by someone in front of him and had to take avoiding action, hopefully that won't happen this week, I feel he has a very good chance, the sauber really has been the surprise of the season, and tends to do better in the race than in quali, is good on it's tyres, who's to say they can't get their maiden win this week, I hope so.

Interesting choice of penalty, hasn't it always been five places in the past?

what an interesting race its going to be tommorow!!

Button! where has this form come from? congrats on the 1st pole for McLaren. Going to be dangerous because a happy and fast Button is an almost unbeatable button (just watch out when you overtake vettel ;) )

Koba! your the man! keep answering those critics! Im probably not expecting much over the race but on the otherhand he has looked fast all weekend.

Kimi is the deadly darkhorse. The Lotus has never been this good in qualyfying so it can only mean good things for the race.

Alonso. Its a good safe position for the title race. a podium is very possible which is overdue for him here.

Hamilton. I think its obvious he is effected from the bad news over the week. Hope he has a clean race.

"It was a disaster for me, but we are still in the top 10 so it is damage limitation for me. It was literally all down to the rear wing," Hamilton said.

"I was told the difference in wings was not so great, so it is definitely a surprise. I was told that in qualifying my wing would be quicker but for some reason it wasn't.

"It would be great to be up there fighting for a one-two tomorrow but with the wing I have that is not going to happen. The quick cars will be quick in the race tomorrow.

"Jenson's wing is working perfectly for him. It's great for him and I hope he gets maximum points tomorrow."

Hamilton said he got everything out of his McLaren in his chosen configuration.

"Nothing happened on my lap, I got absolutely everything out of the car on all of the laps that I had generally," he said.

"The set-up might not be perfect but I can't make up the time that I lose on the straights."
