If someone had told me 4 years ago we would be spending this much and beating 3 of the biggest clubs in the world to sign someone like Saint Gaston - I would have called the doctor for them. Amazing. Just....amazing. Watch out world - we're coming
8 Players at 30 million...few of us expected that and I think some of the players will turn out to be bargains. They've just said on SSN that for the 3rd window running QPR have bought the most players....doesn't seem to do them that much good although they have avoided relegation. We are building a team here and, hopefully, can bring youngsters through as planned.
Absolutely - and isn't the average age of the players QPR have bought something like 29, whilst ours is about 22? Crazy, absolutely crazy.
I voted "brilliant", but really feel it was "very good". If we can start to keep clean sheets then we will be fine.
I said right after the end of last season that we would buy young and would not buy ageing though experienced PL players. Only time will tell if that is the right way to go, but it is Cortese's way. That sounds a good name for a street doesn't it? Cortese Way
Not so sure....I think we are getting into the "you score if you want - we're going to score more" territory! Better check your blood pressure boys
My only real concern. We've conceeded five so far and have only added a new centre back without premier league experience. Although I do think he will be quality, its how quickly he'll settle is the key. Otherwise we gotta hope all our new forwards will keep the ball up the other end and score so many that defending will become a lost art.
Agree with Jen about Rodriguez; still can't believe it. But he won't do it alone, so I hope that the others prove to be as good as we've been promised. Pleased Hammond is fixed up. He seems a decent bloke who did a good job, but was not top drawer. Surprised by Sharp's move, but good luck to him. He seems a realistic guy who will have made the decision calmly, and while we may be baffled I'm sure Nigel knows his business. The season starts for us now on September 15. I'm so looking forward to seeing Mayuka and Rodriguez play together, and seeing Rickie benefit from decent service and a couple of quick players around him. Overall it's all good. UTS
I still think that we need to strengthen the defence especially at LB, I really rate fox going forward but in defence ?. maybe another CB also would have been good. Hopefully all these will be priorities in January. Unless of course our goal difference is so high in the plus side that defence is not needed and we play a 1-8-1 formation
I was just reading an article where 75% of Newcastle fans were dissatisfied with their summer signing deals and I wondered what the Southampton fans think.
I put "not as good as thought". Let me clarify, the signings we have made, I am chuffed with. I never thought we'd get Clyne, let along Gaston Ramirez. However, I still feel we needed another CB. For that reason, I could not select "brilliant!" for the transfers as I think we are one short. But "brilliant!" is the word for those who have come in.
I voted brilliant, because I can't fault the ambition. If I was going to carp just the tiniest bit, I would have liked a trusty standby CB with genuine PL experience, who can share the workload throughout the season. But I am being picky, because I've no doubt Saints tried to get one, and the old dyed-in-the-wool professional values held sway, i.e. that Southampton is across the way from where they hold sailing competitions, etc... It's an old and extremely obsolete view, but it's difficult to shake off. We'll do it though, with Cortese as Chairman. Then they'll be sorry they underestimated us..!
Clyne, Rodriguez, Mayuka, Ramirez, Davis, Yoshida and Gazzaniga is a pretty stunning haul, all things considered. Could do for another defender, but we did absurdly well.
I voted "brilliant", mainly because this window has nailed 2 myths which fans of other clubs, and quite a few of our own, have been saying about us for the last couple of years: 1. Nicola Cortese and the Liebherr family have only limited funds to back the team, 2. Nigel Adkins hasn't got a big enough reputation as a manager to attract big names to the club. Both of these falsehoods have now been laid to rest FOR EVER.
