Anyone else heard the news? According to the press, we have been negotiating with Man Utd and will be signing Berbatov for 18 million in the summer.

Berbatov has been on the bench for the last few Man Utd games including the one against us, and he is still the premier leagues top goalscorer (netting 21 goals) However this hasn't stopped him slipping to the bench behind a out of form Rooney.

Berbatov is a lifelong Newcastle supporter and admired Shearer who was his hero, is the number 9 shirt calling Berbatov to us? What's your opinion on the apparent move for the striker?

Would have him here in a heartbeat but it would never happen, hes like Viduka but better and less injury prone.

Well as lovely as that would be, I cant see it happening, and 18 million is a bit steep at his age. Wouldnt object to it though, guaranteed goals and Ben Arfa off Berbatov would be terrifying for defences.

For the right price and on the right wages, yes! Absolute class player and the perfect lone striker with Ben Arfa in behind. Where did you here about this though?

For some strange reason, I think it might happen! Unlikely but football is a strange sport, and it's not the first time Ferguson has chased a player off!

I think he's brilliant, not sure if we should be spending half our money on a 30 year old though.

One of them online websites, and some talk on Twitter. I tried to find the website again but for the life of me couldn't remember the name! Sorry.

If he were younger then yes, we're not in the position at the moment to be spending that sort of money on a 30-year old. We need someone who will still be here in a few years following a gradual improvement so we can start challenging for European spots, not someone who will help us finish midtable then retire.

He's an amazing player but from an investment point of view, I can't see Ashley buying a player with little sell-on value.

If you thought Owen was lazy (which he wasn't) then Berbatov won't stand a chance. Besides the obvious fact that he's the wrong side of 30 and we should be investing more cleverly rather than going back to the bad old days of Freddie Shepherd signings, the second he doesn't chase a loose ball half the Gallowgate will be all over him. Sad but true.

He's good but to pay more than half of our transfer budget on him seems a bit of a waste because he's not exactly a long term investment is he? If we payed that much for someone like Lukaku (I know he's going to go to chelsea or real but as an example of a young, talented player for a lot of money) then he would only get better and better and could play at the club for 10 years.

Or more realistically, he'd have a great season for us and we'd then sell him to Chelsea or Real for a big profit.

Talking about him being too old, if you could keep him playing as he is now til he's 35 (his game is certainly not about pace, so its possible) then it wouldnt be a bad investment. Sadly I cant see it happening, so thi is irrelevant. Also I imagine his wages will be around the 100k mark at Man U.

We need a bit of short term success right now, if we got Berbatov and he helped us into the Europa league then can start attracting even better players
At the moment we to far down the league for the likes of Gervinho or Lukaka to join us

We're not that far down, surely Gervinho et al could see that with 35mil investment we are seriously pushing for Europe? (Oh and Lukaku would never happen)

A player who is on the 'wrong side of 30' yet can net 21 goals in a season is fantastic. And due to his game being more methodical and strong based I could defiantly see him playing in another 5 years Smudger. It's a 50/50 kind of thing. Let's just wait and see I suppose.

I would certainly take him. Would be quality up top with Ben Arfa behind him. Maybe not for £18m.

He's a proven top flight goalscorer, and used to idolise Shearer, so I could actually see it happen!
