'Mate' actually comes from Syria, as it means 'keeper of the sun' in Syrian, and in Syrian culture the sun is thought to be kept by friends <ok>

In Scotland 'man' is interchangeable with '****'.

As in, "Hello, big/wee man/****" and "Awright, man/****?"
