QPR have not given up hope of landing a central defender before the transfer window slams shut on Friday.

Deals for Michael Dawson and Ricardo Carvalho appear to have fallen through – but boss Mark Hughes is urgently sifting through his options to beat the deadline.

The Rs boss is considering a loan move for Porto centre-back Rolando as a means of plugging the gap at a club not averse to a last-day whirl of activity.

On deadline day a year ago, Rangers signed three that included a midnight dash for defender Anton Ferdinand to out his signature on the dotted line before hopes turned to pumpkins.

Now Hughes wants competition for the central back.

“It was the plan at the beginning of the window (to add a central defender),” said Hughes. “Of all the players we wanted – it was the one position we haven’t been able to address.

“But we’re looking at it, and hoping to get one more player. I’m not sure we’ll do it – but we’re trying.”

Would love one of Carvalho, Dawson, Mbia. But two would be ideal.

"I’m not sure we’ll do it – but we’re trying". Not very reassuring considering we have already seen just how weak we are in that position. Does anyone actually know why the Dawson deal went cold?

Dawson deal went cold because he doesn't want to come to us. If he's forced to leave spuds the only place he wants to go is Sunderland. Go figure.

We will sign someone, but it's a shame that's its all the deals for cb have fallen through as it's the area we need strengthening most. I just hope we get one we are after and don't have to make do with second best on deadline day. Although on deadline day some real golden nuggets can crop up.

Anyway, only 2 days of transfer bull to put up with.

i think the signing of Cesar will make things easier to sign quality defenders.

Exactly, he will make others see we mean business. Our team in a couple of years will be something quiet exciting. Or should I say more exciting than it is now.
