You have the monopoly on Hull City commentaries. This afternoon, I am forced to listen to a mid morning old ladies favourite DJ with yet another ex-pro stealing a wage and expenses telling me about their wives, twitter accounts, what Chris Powell is wearing as well as a little information on the game they are reporting on in between.

20 minutes in, I have already had updates from a game between a team who none of the listeners give a stuff about against a team 300 miles away in Somerset.

Please, why do we have to have continual references to teams who nobody cares about. I don't wish to know about Scunthorpe, Grimsby, Lincoln, Boston or anyone else, and they don't want to know about us. By all means, go to North Ferriby, Hall Road if you like, even York, Bridlington, Boro or somewhere with even mild local association or interest, but leave the others to those who care on their own station.

I'd say Scunthorpe is closer than Middlesbrough. It's just local radio, they check on Grimsby and Scunny if there's a goal or something important, in the same way that the Scunthorpe game cuts to us from time to time. It's not worth getting annoyed about tbh, it's like 30 seconds or so talking about another football team then it's back to us.

york is much nearer than grimsby or scunthorpe, as indeed is North Ferriby and Hall Road if you like. I have much more affiliation to york and north ferriby as well, and, i repeat, the lincolnshire folk dont care about us either. hell's bells, lincolnshire even has its own radio station.

    Mussie

Why don't you email or contact David Holdsworth ([email protected]) he's the Controller of BBC English Regions and a very personable fellow (I can tell you from first hand experience!) He can answer all your questions, as you are a licence payer you have a right of reply. Please let us know what he says?

Otherwise, you might want to contact 'Feedback' presented by Roger Bolton on Radio 4 (it is an independently produced and edited programme by Whistledown and so not an internal BBC production). Here's the link...http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/features/feedback/contact/

Finally, the Media Show presented by Steve Hewlett is another avenue for you to complain or ask your questions. I used to work with one of the former producers and they love the sort of topics you raise regularly on here. They cover print through to broadcasting and whilst I share your loathing of self-serving journalism, the production team are programme makers rather than just journalists. Here's the link http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/features/the-media-show/contact/

Let us know how you get on...

    Best wishes

Does it? It used to be that the FM commentary got interrupted to go to the other games but the AM commentary was continuous. It's been a while since I lived in range of the signal to be able to listen.

    <cough>

    And it's Dunfermline. :p

I really don't understand why your complaining. BBC Humberside has a broadcast area of the north and south banks of the Humber, covering Hull, Grimsby and Scunthorpe. Since all three places have professional football teams, it seems only fair they are covered.

As for the commentators, what would you rather they do, sit in silence whilst nothing happens?

I kind of agree with Mussie, I don't have a problem with Humberside covering the teams in their areas; but I do have issues with them breaking the coverage they are giving to "update" from the other game, when the people who give a ****e would not be enduring a commentary from one of the other teams. Do they genuinely think that a Grimsby fan is going to be listening through an entire city game just to get updates? In the 21st century, you can get your updates elsewhere.

As for the quality of the pundits - they need to freshen it up. How many people have played for City since 1991? Swanny played for us for two years between 1989 and 1991, yet he is the expert summariser, and he is irreplacable. There are better City legends than that available. They also seem to thrive on their ignorance. Their job is to commentate on football matches - a big part of that is saying the players names. Not many of us knew much about Proschwitz or Aluko before they signed, but most of us get their names right. There is no excuse for them repeatedly pronouncing their names wrong over and over.

It's disrespectful to say the least.

It's the same for any local radio station, they have to report local news, as they are funded by licence payers. Are you not happy unless you're chuntering about the local rag or the local radio? Have you thought about moving elsewhere so you could chunter about some other cities poor media? Unless of course you are 'Sutty' at the YP, slurp. Seriously, it's boring.

So Mussie complains about Sky for being corporate monsters intent on destroying the beautiful game, splashing their dirty money all over the place. focussing only on their own evil benefits.

Mussie also complains about the BBC, which is everything Sky isn't and tries to be as fair as possible.

    lol

Hey Mussie, you should start your own radio/tv channel, although I suspect you'd end up hating that too. :D

That is just factually inaccurate (unless you are as anti-Humber Bridge as you are everything else that's not a mute character with a magic wand from a children's tv show).

factually, i am correct. i know where i live and how far it is to york, scunthorpe and grimsby respectively. i also travel york and beyond regularly, and in spite of working in grimsby and scunny for 4 years some years ago, apart from football related matters, that is the only reason i have ever gone there. why the BBC tells us we have something in common with Lincolnshire (mainly for their own London based objectives), i do not know.

just for information to others who may have issues with what i say, i also live in west yorkshire for a significant portion of my time, and i understand what non-fabricated regional identities mean. unfortunately the BBC don't!!!!

Lincoln, I can't swear I contacted the guy you mention, but I pretty much did as you suggested some time ago.

At the time, the south bank listeners were commenting that they got ignored and that they had no interest in the north bank. North bank listeners commented that they were bored of hearing about the south bank as they had no interest or connection. This wasn't just sport.

I had a rummage around and found that this was far from unique to this region and many other license payers across the country (Kent and Devon spring to mind) couldn't understand why their local heritage was being ignored.

I contacted various people in local and nation BBC and asked for details of how they determined regional coverage. As it's a public body, I didn't expect any difficulty in them being able to answer such a basic question.

What I got back can best be summed up as varying between moronic incompetence, arrogance and outright lies. Their attitude was quite frankly disgraceful. I did lodge a complaint with the BBC and also with the ombudsman but despite numerous further requests and reminders they didn't go any further than acknowledging the reply.

DMD, I worked for the beeb and due to my job I'm still connected to them via production and research etc so what you say surprises me to be honest. Fair enough, if that was the reply then that was piss poor. I have in the past posted reasons for how the regions were developed and why, but I don't speak for the BBC on policy. However, I do write and teach the history on parts of the BBC. David Holdsworth is someone who is sensitive to criticism and will explain I'm sure. If not, then can I suggest Simon Patten [email protected] (Managing Editor of Radio Humberside) and/or Charlie Partridge [email protected] Managing Editor of BBC Radio Lincolnshire and ex Radio Humberside). Charlie is honest and excellent with this sort of stuff. If you want to PM I'd be happy to supply my name as a reference etc.

Sorry for the length of reply, but I'm just trying to help!

    Cheers

Simon Patten is one that I did contact and found that he typified my previous reply. I found that some of those low down the pecking order replied displaying a grasp of the problem, but pointing out that they just obey orders. Patten and those above him seemed aggrieved that anyone had the affront to question their replies further. They actually changed what they said in reply. I'm actually trying to be tactful about what I put as I'm not sure I've still got the proof, so calling them liars could leave me open.

I'm also aware that I'm far, far from alone in my opinion of the management, not just at a local level around here but at other local areas and also nationally. Pompous and arrogant doesn't begin to describe them.

I appreciate your offer, but I initially contacted them with what I felt was a bit of innocent curiosity, their attitude in their replies has left such an impression on me that I can barely acknowledge them as people, let alone budget holders in a public body and I have no confidence at all in their ability to engage in a mature and respectful manner.

I don't know Patten very well, but my brother is a journo/presenter there and I'll mention that to him. (NOT Burnsy) Seriously, I would contact Charlie - who I know well, very well indeed. I can assure you that you wouldn't get that nonsense from him. The offer of using my name is there if you ever decide to take it up. To be honest there are plenty of arses at the BBC, and the higher up the food chain you go, the more they have an inflated sense of themselves. I could tell some stories...anyway... try Charlie!
