    CARLISLE UTD v PORTSMOUTH

    League One – 25 August 2012

    Last meeting at Brunton Park
    22 September 2009 – League Cup Round 3
    Carlisle 1-3 Pompey

    Who are Ya?
Founded in 1904, Carlisle moved to their current Brunton Park home in 1909. They were admitted into the league [Division Three North] in 1928 and remained in that division for the rest of its existence. A bottom half finish in 1958 meant they played the following season in the new Fourth Division.
In 1965 they completed back-to-back promotions to earn their first venture into the Second Division. Nine years later, a final day win over Aston Villa, coupled with defeat for Blackpool saw them clinch promotion to the top flight. Their First Division adventure lasted for three seasons (Autumn, Winter and Spring – I’ll get me coat). That season, they did, however, reach the Quarter Finals of the FA Cup; their best performance in the competition.
The middle 70s to the middle 80s were spent in the middle divisions before relegation to the Fourth Division in 1987. In 2004 they suffered relegation to the Conference, but bounced back at the first attempt when they beat Stevenage in the Play-Off final. A second successive promotion followed to take them into League One, where they have remained until today.
Highest League Finish: 22nd in First Division [Premier League] 1975
Lowest League Finish: 3rd in the Conference 2005
Note: Their highest finish saw them relegated and their lowest finish saw them promoted!
    Honours:
    3rd Tier [League One] winners 1965, runners-up 1982
    4th Tier [League Two] winners 1995, 2006, runners-up 1964
    5th Tier [BSP] Play-off winners 2005
    Football League Trophy [Johnsons Paint] winners 1997, 2011, runners-up 1995, 2003, 2006, 2010

    Yesteryear
    15 January 1966 – Second Division [Championship]
    Carlisle 2-1 Pompey
This was the first season in which the two sides competed in the same division. This win for Carlisle avenged the 4-1 defeat they’d suffered at Fratton Park in October. Both sides went on to finish mid-table, with Pompey in 12th and Carlisle in 14th.

    Mystic Devo
Appy has some-how patched together a side of individuals with one great thing in common – they are hungry and WANT to play. Recent Pompey sides would have wilted when Colchester’s second goal went in, but not this lot. I think their ‘never give up’ attitude puts to shame the millionaires who are happy to sit on Premier League benches counting their money. This bunch of guys will have no intention of going all that way to come back empty handed.

    Devo reckons: Carlisle 0-1 Pompey

Given your recent succes Devo I'd be willing to put money on a 1-0 Pompey win - if I had any to spare that is.

On another note, is this the match between the two most geographically seperated sides in League One?

No hat-trick for Mystic Devo but, blimey, they got their money's worth. A goal in the 90th minute and another three in injury time.

I hope no-one left early to 'avoid the traffic' <laugh>
