Why are British players so highly priced?

Do you think currently for players such as Joe Cole it is detrimental to their England chances playing abroad? I think more players should do it and it certainly will improve them but they then seem to become the forgotten men? Or maybe its just because so few have tried.

We have never admired and revered skillful players in this country! It is a scandal that players like Hoddle and Waddle especially didn't get all the England caps they deserved! All we want in this country are players that are "whole-hearted", "Good Engine box to box players" and "good in the air". Who needs fancy football players with flair and skill! <doh>

Its not a case of trying, foreign teams don't want British players, they are technically inept, one dimensional and just could not cope with adapting to a different style of football.

They should be banned from playing in this country so they can see how hard they have to work to be a success like the rest of the footballing world(and I mean that quite sincerely).

    <yikes>

I am really struggling to name just one English player that could walk into the Barcelona side let alone the Spainish national team!

    Joe Hart possibly!

Heskey was a fantastic player, yes he was big, quick, good in the air but he was also very skilful, had a wonderful touch and played the game with great intelligence

    Don't sound suprised

I don't think theres one from the last 30 years who would get in the current side, (Spain or Barcelona)

Not Gascoigne, not Shearer, not Beckham, not Lineker, not Waddle, not Hoddle, not Seaman (although England does produce great goalkeepers), not Sheringham, not Gerrard (in fact, especially not Gerrard), not Lampard.

EVEN CARLTON PALMER wouldn't get in those sides.

I agree with most of that but Lineker did play for Barcelona for a few seasons with some great success!

I don't think it is just the nationality but because they are based in England/Britain. Foreigners who are already in the PL will still go for as much as a British player, the foreign markets are cheaper, not just because the players are foreign

    Warren Barton??

I'd argue that Gascoigne, Hoddle or Shearer in their prime would push for a spot in almost any side. Not saying they'd be first picks, but they were capable of being in the mix.

gascoigne in his prime would. he's exactly the sort of player that would shine in a side like that with his close control, quick feet, passing and vision. terrifically strong too, very powerful. imagine him tucked in next to xavi and iniesta <yikes>

    i think hoddle would too.

waddle was a bit of a hero of mine and i think he was good enough to play for most clubs sides, not that he'd have fitted into barca's style nowadays.

carlton palmer wouldn't even get in a team selected by carlton palmer!

Gascoigne circa 1989/90 would have got into any football team you care to mention! Unfortunately after his wild lunge during the 1991 FA Cup final and the subsequent serious knee injury, he just wasn't the same player again! And to think that Bobby turned him down when he was on trial at Ipswich in 1982! <wah>

Currently with much of the "technical" talent on show in the premier league coming from foreign players there has to be some concern that if another league was to become as powerful as the PL they would go there instead. This would leave the standard of football at a very low level. I also feel that as mentioned it is important for players to go abroad but also more coaches should do so, if anyone actually wants them?

true, but he'd still have been good enough during his prime to walk into the barca team, and that was my point. the fact he is a class a pillock who ruined his career has nowt to do with it <laugh>

makes you wonder, had he signed for sir alex at man utd instead of heading for the bright lights of venables spurs team, things may have panned out differently... i think ferguson once said it was his biggest regret not getting gascoigne from newcastle.

Surely Gascoigne would be in competion with those two, for how those teams play he just wouldn't dislodge them, he'd give the ball away to much. You need patience for those teams to ping those passes. I'm not sure Gascoigne is as reverred abroad as he is here and probably wouldn't even be thought of if asked the question.

The only player I'd consider to be even close to those two would be Scholes, technically Hoddle isn't a patch on Xavi and Iniesta, their control is just immense, Hoddle couldn't do that, my memories of Hoddle was of him pinging long balls out to wingers and forwards.

The ones that proved a flop abroad include Ian Rush (Juventus), Mark Hughes (Barcelona, Bayern Munich), Mark Hately (AC Milan) BUT at least they had the bottle to give it a go!
