Sunderland fan(living in South Oz) here in peace. I feel I need to express my opinion and view over the potential transfer of Dempsey to Liverpool. My Liverpool mate that I work with tells me that he would love it if the club signed him, but he doesn't fit into Liverpools transfer policy that prefers signing players around the 25yo mark or younger. Correct me if I am wrong, and I am sure in the past you may have signed older players, but for the majority the above policy I assume is correct at this time. He points out that it has something to do with the resale value of the younger players, should they wish to leave in the future. However, my argument to him is that surely the signing of Clint Dempsey will potentially improve Liverpool's chances of a Top Four finish. This in turn will convert to a Champions League place and more than cover any non resale value when he finishes his time at Liverpool. Dempsey would be an ideal attacking midfielder that can score goals, the number of chances I watch you guys have during a game is incredibe. With a proven goalscorer in the Premier League in your side surely the gamble is worth the risk. The alternative is to not sign him, maybe sign a younger unproven PL star from another country, and miss out on that Top 4 spot. I watch Liverpool on a regular basis and feel that most games you dominate possesion but lack a bit of luck in finishing, the quality from KK last season is their, but a goalscorer is the key missing elemant. My team Sunderland have just signed Steven Fletcher from relegated Wolves for around 12M+. He wouldn't be a major signing for your team, but at the end of the day if he gets us 10 or 15 goals a season, our fans will be over the moon. To be honest I would be pretty happy if Dempsey joined Sunderland, but I know that will never happen, we can never attract top players like him to the NE, yet I get the impression that some(or most) of Liverpool fans don't want Dempsey to sign for your club? Sorry if this article seems a bit naive, just curious as to what Liverpool fans actually want in order to improve the goal scoring problem. That is all.
all well and good unitl you wrtie out a first team 11 and at 10mil he doesn't actually make it so unless gerrard gets dropped for sahin (if he does arrive today) then the issue is value, at 10mil i'd want more than 2 years that he's got left at his prime. in the end i think the game being played by both clubs is who blinks first. 10mil is unrealistic fee for a guy who is not nor never will be RVP but is in his last contract year. the fee could be 6mil on the last day frankly. I predict if any deal happens is on the 30th or 31st august...... fulham would do very well to repeat the kacalic and dalle valle deal with us and snatch a good young player from us.
Knows where the onion bag is and has leadership qualities can grab the game by the scruff of the neck when needed. You can't buy that in youth.
I think Dempsey is as close to a goalscorer as we will get under Rodgers but I do have my doubts about the player because of his age, plus I don't think his record is that great. I actually asked follow users about Fletcher yesterday, I think he would have been a good signing around the £7m-£8m mark but £12m+ (could raise to £14m+) is too much IMO. End of the day, one or two older players that fall outside the recruitment criteria doesn't matter if they help us achieve the first stepping stone of getting a top four finish. Will Dempsey do that? I'm not so sure
We've gotten rid of Maxi, Kuyt, Aqua and Bellamy and brought in Borini, Allen, Assaidi and Sahin. Replaced the old with the new.
"Hole"...LOL, had to read that a couple of times, before I figured out what you were trying to say. Do you throw them in deliberately to affirm your title of "Not606 Spelling Champion"?
If we could land him for £7.5 million-£8 million it would be good business. He's scored close enough to 40 goals in all competitions in the last two seasons, would be ideal for away games when the away side usually plays on the break. He's deceptively quick too, and would be an ideal replacement for Dirk Kuyt.
Thanks for the replies, it seems that most of you want him to sign but for about 6 to 8M. I think eventually Fulham will fold and you will get him. He will be a magnificent player for your team, especially as the first 5-6 games you have are very tough, and will determine the future of Liverpools season as well as Rodgers stay in charge. Has Sahin joined Liverpool? I was under the impression that it was between your club and Arsenal, I doubt Nuri will be the answer to your goalscoring problem. At the end of the day, Liverpool IMO should always be a Top 4 club, the respect Liverpool have in Europe is second to none, however the huge money spend by the billionaire owners is making the Top 4 very competitive. I am not saying that Dempsey will be the answer, but he is a hell of a lot better than the majority of your players, regardless of age. (Also thought that McBride and Donovan were top players that provided that attacking option). Tough game on the weekend but you have a good record against the bigger clubs (eg Chelsea, Utd, City and Arsenal). All the best for the season, Liverpool supporters deserve Champions League once again.
You know what, if we ended up spending £10m I wouldn't care. Still a good signing. Yeah bitches, that's what I think. And? And? So what.
1. rodgers put his neck out and said so. so if he's wrong he'll look bad... i'll beleive him. 2. i think looking at dempsey's record he had two good years and only last year did he score that many... If we put a first 11 down i jut don't see dempsey being no 1 choice unless you drop gerrard or borini out so if we intend to do so ok. 3. 10mil no matter what i think is over priced so again... 30/31st august we'll hear a lower fee and maybe a swap in it too. 4. fulham should go rot for thier complaint IMO, its likely our club knew it was in during july and said right stuff yuo fulham and might only bid 5mil on the last day to sicken them.
Your friend is correct. FSG's M.O. is - or more accurately, was - to scout talented younger players who haven't worked out at other clubs, for whatever reason, and put them with experienced quality players, with wages as reward rather than incentive. Dempsey has never been quality in the accepted sense. If he was he'd have been with a big club by now. This is yet another example of how FSG are jettisoning their Big Plan and are now flapping around making it up as they go along. I can't believe this is even being proposed.
