I know it's a ****ing mystery. Almiost to a man they begged - even voted - to go into SFL3 and take their licks in the SFL, and now that they are there most of them have done nothing but bleat about being in SFL3 and how that is a "Punishment".

REGAN AND LAWWELL PLAN RANGERS STITCH-UP

RANGERS fans do not want to be railroaded into a Stewart Regan inspired short cut back to the top flight as part of a Scottish Football Association plan to help Scottish Premier League clubs.

Ibrox supporters want nothing to do with any SFA-Stewart Regan scheme to reorganise Scottish Football in order that the SPL clubs who voted to kick out Rangers, get the financial value of them back in the top flight sooner rather than later.

In fact many of the many fans I have spoken to about the plan Scottish Football Association chief executive Stewart Regan revealed on Wednesday, suspect Regan’s pal and SFA board buddy, Peter Lawwell may be behind the secret moves.

And they may well be right!

For my information is that even after the Lawwell brokered SPL-Sky deal was signed three weeks ago, Celtic chief executive Lawwell has made a number of hush-hush trips to London.

Unlike Lawwell’s previous forays to the Capital, when he worked in tandem with another of Stewart Regan’s close pals, Scottish Premier League chief executive Neil Doncaster, Lawwell’s more recent trips to London have, I believe, been solo affairs.

Leading many astute observers to speculate he is still active in talks with Sky and with the Sports Channel’s boss, Barney Francis, who appears to hang on Lawwell’s every word.

There has also been speculation inside the past 24 hours that Lawwell may have been less than pleased with Regan after the SFA bigwig let the cat out of the bag about his reconstruction plans to reporters when he spoke to them at Hampden on Wednesday afternoon.

Certainly my information is, certain senior figures on the sixth floor at Hampden were unhappy at Regan for lifting the lid on what had, until then, been a so-secret scheme to bribe Charles Green to go along with a short cut back to the SPL for Rangers.

The reasoning among the plotters is, the sooner Rangers get back into the top flight, the sooner the faceless men who own Rangers and who are represented by Charles Green, can cash in their investment in the Ibrox club and make a huge profit.

The reorganisation plotters reckon this is the bait which will hook Charles Green.

But any such agreement by Charles Green would fly in the face of the express wishes of the overwhelming majority of Rangers supporters who want to see the SPL clubs who they perceive as their enemies, suffer the financial consequences of their vindictive decision to kick Rangers out of the top flight.

It was not what Celtic supremo Peter Lawwell had hoped for, but any scheme which he may have backed to hit Rangers with points penalties for at least two seasons, while keeping their cash value in the SPL, backfired when cowardly SPL chairmen caved in to the bigoted threats and rants from their wild eyed supporters and gave Rangers the boot.

Since then Peter Lawwell has given every indication of a man possessed of a mission. And that mission has appeared to many to be, keep as much of the SPL’s value to Sky as possible, while giving Sky chief Barney Francis hope and reason to believe Rangers’ exile from the SPL will not last for three years.

Which means there must be re-organisation. The sort of re-organisation plan SFA chief executive Stewart Regan let out of the bag by talking about it to reporters on Wednesday.

However, as well as the attitude of Rangers supporters hardening against the SPL clubs and any perception of a Peter Lawwell-Stewart Regan secret plan to get their club and its ability to make money for the rest of the SPL, back to the top flight, there is also the attitude of the 30 clubs who form the Scottish Football League and who are led by the only figure from the three bodies to emerge with any respect from the last few months, David Longmuir.

While the SFA’s Stewart Regan-Peter Lawwell-Rod Petrie Celtic and pro-Celtic cabal, along with the SPL’s Neil Doncaster-Peter Lawwell-Eric Riley even more pro Celtic cabal, are mistrusted, David Longmuir is a trusted figure.

And the Scottish Football League’s 30 clubs are also, in the main, trusted to do the right thing and not be railroaded by any Regan-Lawwell-Petrie SFA gang, or by the bully boys from the Doncaster-Lawwell-Riley SPL.

The SFL showed just how strong they were when, after the SPL froze out Rangers, they refused to be press ganged into parachuting Rangers into the First Division, a deal which would have suited the Regan, Lawwell, and Petrie SFA, along with the Doncaster, Lawwell, and Riley SPL, plus others such as Dundee United’s Stephen Thompson.

The SFL chairman showed they are honourable men by admitting Rangers to their league and placing them in the Third Division, a decision which was right and proper and which was met with the wholehearted approval of Rangers fans.

Now the SFL are going to have to stand tall again and be brave in the face of the financial blandishments the Regan-Lawwell-Petrie axis, plus the Doncaster-Lawwell-Riley cabal will wave under their noses by offering to increase the SPL to 16 teams.

But the mathematics don’t look too good to me.

The backroom brokered blueprint means a mere extra three teams from the First Division would be promoted in the shake-up.

Doesn’t it?

Or would it be a case of the SPL wanting just the First Division champions, as is already the case, plus two others promoted?

With a third team, not promoted, but invited? With that third team being Rangers?

However it plays out the words carve up and stitch up spring to mind. As I am sure they will spring to the minds of at least 20 of the 30 clubs who form the Scottish Football League. The 20 or so who have little or nothing to gain.

And as any change to the status and set up of the Scottish Football League would require a vote in favour from 75 per cent of the member clubs, it is increasingly unlikely any plan, seen to be the handiwork of Stewart Regan, Peter Lawwell and Rod Petrie of the SFA, along with Neil Doncaster, Peter Lawwell and Eric Riley of the SPL, would get such approval.

Especially as the memory remains fresh in the minds of the chairmen of SFL clubs from Berwick to Peterhead, of how those same SFA and SPL bully boys tried to railroad them just a few short weeks ago.

Added to which, Rangers supporters most emphatically do not want the club they support to give any aid or succour to the SPL clubs who treated Rangers so disgracefully, again just a few short weeks ago.

Why then is such a fuss being made of the fact an officer and a gentleman, serving in Her Majesty’s Forces (his Granny’s army), got naked with a beautiful young woman in the privacy of his hotel room while on leave?

While at the same time, lots of people seem to be downplaying the story about a Daily Record columnist who is a Mirror Group colleague of Brian Patrick McNally?

You know the tale? Or has the coverage of it been so downbeat that you’ve missed it?

It is the one about an MP and Daily Record columnist who made a statement about a man who is wanted on rape charges, being guilty of no more than poor sexual etiquette.

Have I missed something here? Or do newspapers now believe that dog bites man is a better story than man bites dog?

Oh, Prince Henry <loveblush> spending taxpayers money on a craps table - the indignity of it being a story .

Curiously, also in the news today, a Asil Nadir has been sentenced to 10 years in the clink for defrauding Â£29m (NOT Â£128m) whilst a cyclist is being stripped of seven titles (when he lost a baw - hasn't he been punished enough?)

CHARLES GREEN has won over Rangers supporters to such an extent that by this time next week the season ticket sales tally will hit the 40,000 mark.

That is more than it was when Rangers went into the campaign in the Scottish Premier League this time last year as defending champions. It is an amazing statement of faith in their team, despite its Third Division status, from angry fans.

But so far, that response from Rangers fans has been more of a direct two fingers up to the Scottish Premier League, the Scottish Football Association and everyone else who those supporters rightly believe hate their club.

So far, despite some grudging acceptance of Charles Green, the vast majority of those fans remains sceptical of Charles Green and the men whose interests the chief executive officer represents.

Most supporters I have spoken to will accept and admit that much of the work they see Charles Green has done meets with their approval. And they agree with some of what he has said. But it is a grudging approval, a reluctant agreement and every supporter I have spoken to adds the words… so far.

They are also quick to add, they still have reservations about Charles Green.

But there is one thing Charles Green could do to convince even the biggest doubters. One thing he could do to ensure even his most outspoken critic – that’s me – will view him in a different way.

One thing he could do to earn more than just the benefit of the doubt.

It is quite simply this. Charles Green could convince Walter Smith that this regime is good for Rangers. Good for the future well-being of the club and good for the vast army of Rangers supporters.

And if my information is right, then I believe Charles Green has already started to woo the man Rangers supporters trust more than any other in the world and who they refer to simply as…. “Sir” Walter.

Charles Green invited Walter Smith to be his guest in the directors’ box at Ibrox when Rangers met East Stirling in their opening home Third Division game last week.

But it is what happened afterwards which may point the way ahead for Charles Green.

For the two men met for the first time and spent almost an hour in private conversation. I would love to have been a fly on the wall.

One of the many things Walter Smith most assuredly is, is a very good judge of men. He is a shrewd judge of character.

Therefore, if Charles Green can convince Walter Smith his intentions are honourable towards the club Smith grew up supporting, became assistant manager off, before taking over to steer Rangers to nine-in-a-row, returned to for a second time around of three-in-a-row and a European final, then the chief executive will have won over all the doubters. And all of his critics.

Including me!

Do you sense a but coming? That Charles Green should then go even further?

Then you’re right.

What Charles Green should do is invite Walter Smith to take a seat in the Ibrox Boardroom. As I have said, no man is more trusted by Rangers supporters than Walter Smith. Honoured, revered and even worshipped too.

If Walter Smith felt comfortable enough with Charles Green to accept an invitation to become a Rangers director, that would be the final nail in the coffin of criticism of Charles Green. From everyone.

Including me!

However, I believe Charles Green will have to reveal more to Walter Smith than he has so far been willing to, to others, about the beneficial owners of Rangers. That is the men – or even just man – whose name is protected by Blue Pitch Holdings.

Were Smith to be satisfied as to the character and probity of the beneficial owner or owners, I believe he could be tempted to return for a third stint at the club.

And, once again, if Charles Green wishes to win over the sceptics, doubters and outspoken critics – that’s me again – he should consider giving Walter Smith an active role as, for example, chairman, in place of the ineffectual Malcolm Murray.

For if Green is really determined to take on Stewart Regan and the Scottish Football Association, if Green is honestly determined to tangle with Neil Doncaster and the Scottish Premier League and if Green really does want to shake Celtic and Peter Lawwell and their influence inside the SFA and SPL, there is no better man to carry the fight to the enemies of Rangers than Walter Smith.

Indeed, Green could go even further. For if he manages to convince Walter Smith to return to Ibrox and take his rightful and fully earned place at the Boardroom table, then the time would be ripe to also invite that great Rangers legend, John Greig, to join him there.

With Walter Smith and John Greig as directors, the Ibrox board would start to look like a Rangers board of directors again. Rangers would start to look like Rangers again.

Charles Green took the first steps in the right direction when he invited Walter Smith to Ibrox last Saturday and spent so long talking to him. My view is that Smith will have thought long and hard about what Green told him.

If they meet again, Smith will have some hard, searching and probing questions prepared.

If Charles Green can answer them to the satisfaction of Walter Smith and back his claims with proof positive, then I believe the man Rangers supporters trust more than any other, will be back at Ibrox.

With John Greig soon follow-following him back up in the Marble Stairs he first climbed more than half a century ago.
