Apparently Kate's ancestors worked in a Durham colliery. Does that make her a miner royal?

i think they're a good thing. Most people here are non plussed, but abroad, they're a big pull. I'd still far rather have a monarch than a President...

The Commonwealth games would still exist. Most countries in teh Commonwealth are republics. England's first Commonwealth was a republic too.
I like the queen as Head of State of NZ. If we had our own Head of State the British taxpayer wouldn't fund it.

Yes Ak but in Frakkland etc you would go to see the Louvre, Eiffel Tower, Chateaux of the Loire, Pont du Gard, the Alps, the Pyrenees, the prehistoric caves of the Dordogne, the Vineyards of Bordeaux etc etc etc, likewise Italy not short of attractions both natural and man-made plus they've got Herr Pope. And if Mrs Queen was shown the door, all the palaces etc would still be there.

I reckon that if there had been a president in the UK then Peter Benjamin Mandelson, Baron Mandelson would have been up for it. :embarrassed:

Could he have resigned from that job as well?

I think the Royal Family are great. It makes me proud to be British when there are so many people across the world who are fascinated by our Royal Family.

I personally can not wait for the Royal Wedding. I think it is going to be a great day and I hope there will be street parties all over. People need to relax, smile and say hello! If this Royal Wedding can do it, then bring it on!

Norway, I would like to retract my previous comments.

I think the Monarchy is a joke!! Preventing a long standing Watford FC supporter from travelling to the final game of the season is ABSURD!! How dare they!! Everybody, EVERYBODY knows that Watford FC is more important than the Monarchy, and for them to get in the way of one fans ambition is ludicrous. Will and Kate, be ashamed.

I'm reasonably indifferent to the royal family.

They have their good points, such as attracting tourism and Prince Phillip is always good for a humourous quote... But I would like the hangers-on to get lost, the ones that are 75th (etc) in line to the throne but still get 'special treatment'

I must admit, I would like to see a change to the National Anthem too... but guess that is a whole different subject!!

As for the wedding... well, i'll be in Thorpe Park!!

I wonder how much money these minor royals actually get from the public purse - very little I would guess.

Also the Royal Family has owned lands since 1066 - they are as entitled to them and their income as are any of the landed gentry - after all most of these descended from leaders of William the Conqueror's army. If you stripped the monarchy of their wealth you should do the same for the rest of the ancestral landed gentry - and that is fine if you believe in extreme socialism or communism.

The German connexion is a red herring - most royal families in Europe ar related and so some coming over from Saxony and inheriting "family" lands is no different to any of us passing on our possessions to others.

I am not a great Royal follower and probably wont bother to watch any of the Wedding but having a King / Queen as head of state to me is better than a President who is just a politician - and I have very little respect for them - The Queen has only symbolic power so is no threat of any kind to Democracy.

... and finally our royal family earn us billions - interest worldwide in this wedding alone is immense - and a lot of tourism follows it

Indifferent. If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say its a net economic benefit for the country. Provided that is the case, I see no benefit to get rid.

I do wish they would get into the 21st century and change the succession rules to give boys and girls equal treatment though. Elizabeth I, Elizabeth II and Victoria are three of the most influential monarchs this country has had. And at least two of them were female.

They're a big part of our countries legacy.......

They bring in tourists and money.....I don't personally care for them but if there's money to be gained why not?
