Phew! What a morning! It feels like evening! lol...Miss Hornette did very well in her GCSEs and thank goodness, the A level/GCSE year is done with! From here on in it's plain sailing, with only one at a time taking big school exams lol.
pie got all the maths & science grades he needed to do his A levels but to enter the school he was going to, he also needed to get a C in English, which he was predicted, and if you've seen the reports this morning, you can probably guess what he actually did get. My ex and him are having to do the rounds to see if there is a chance that either that school or failing that, the other school he looked at will take him. If they won't, he has to do an English course for a year at the local college. He phoned me with his results at quarter past 10 - I haven't heard from either of them since. My worry is that the longer it takes, the lower down his choices it goes. It has to be sorted today - they're on the ferry back to France this evening. It's a nightmare being at work - I wish I was with them so I would at least know what's going on.
that's really tough ...i hope he gets what he wants. The grades in all subjects seem down this year...Miss H did very well, considering her struggles with learning, but she was disappointed with a couple of results. Still, she got what she needed, and luckily, she wanted to change one of her A level choices, and managed to nick the last available spot on the biology course so it's all good..despite the disappointments..i do hope you'll be able to say the same by the end of the day...after last week, i completely understand the stress!
He's just phoned - he's got into his first choice school but has to have private tuition to improve his English grade (hope that isn't on top of the school fees) and has had to drop doing further maths but in the upper 6th he will be able to do the mechanics part which at least is something.
that's good news...at least he'll be where he wants to be..we had all this last week and it worked out for the best, i'm sure it will for Pie too...well done Pie!
My son also got his early taken GCSE results today, B in Physics and RS and A in Business Studies also some B's in some english subjects (whatever that means) Still needs very good grades to be able to study in the 6th year at Waddeson School He's only 15, seems a lot pressure on the youngsters these days. I think things were far simpler in the olden days, you studied and you sat 'O' levels and if you got the grades and wanted to took 'A' levels. He is happy which is the main thing and so is my ex, so he must have done alright then
Or, like me, you didn't study, sat the 'O' levels and left not caring one jot how well or how badly you fared. Then studied at the School of Hard Knocks for a while before graduating from the University of Life. Much easier in them days - and probably more fun too.
I think the words I should have said was cram as much as you can before the date of the exam and wing it Formy Physics 'O' level I attended the exam, wrote my name on top and just sat back, never had a clue....when we started learning Physics for 'O' level the teacher soon found myself and my friend out, we had no idea and were never going to pass any exam, he actually told us just come to class and as long as we sat at the back and kept quiet we could do what we want So lots of reading of golf magazines and books for 2 years, I don't think you would get away with that these days The only reason I took physics was you had to take one science subject, Chemistry no interest, as for Biology couldn't have cared less, Physics we thought would at least be interesting
Similar to my efforts for Greek - I never bothered turning up for the 2 1/2 hour exam and the school sent the Head Prefect to try to collect me after half an hour. I sauntered in with about 15 minutes to go, wrote my name in Greek on top, added "όλα αυτά είναι ελληνικά για μένα." then like you just sat back. I don't think I passed - never bothered checking.
Oooh! When I were a lad...... Actually, I had to take Religious Education (because I was no good at French - don't ask me what the logic was there) and didn't go to the classes all year. For the O level I was fortunate in that the exam was in the afternoon and I had nothing to do in the morning so I read Luke's gospel. I passed, much to my amazement. I tried the same trick for A levels. It didn't work.
As a young'un fresh out of uni I did actually study these things known as GCSEs and firstly can I pass on my congrats to Miss. Hornette and Pie. There's a lot of talk of ending the modular way of doing things and just sitting one massive exam at the end of two years, like it was for "O" levels. Can't say I agree with this as surely this will cause teachers to teach less and prepare their students for the exams. Results are very important to schools. But as long as you get the results you need for your A Levels its all good and well done to those who did!!!
I was actually in the second year of those who took GCSEs and when I chose my options (as well as English and Maths we had to do a language, a science, a humanity, a practical subject and 2 others but had to put 3 just in case there was a timetable clash) but we could drop the practical subject if we wanted to do 3 sciences and 2 languages. I would've preferred to do that, but we had to give a very good reason why. In these days of league tables, the greater probability of a better mark may be good enough, but I didn't even dare to try it then. Hampshire, the linear method is available anyway as that's what pie did in maths - they changed from modular at about February half term and he still got an A*. The school he's just left had to check with his new school that this wasn't going to affect his chances of getting a place. I saw him about an hour ago and he said that English papers were badly marked and he wouldn't say something like that unless someone had said something to him about it.
