Queens Park Rangers have agreed an initial fee of £7.5m for Tottenham Hotspur defender Michael Dawson.

The England international has yet to undergo a medical but has agreed to the move in principal, after being told he would be third-choice centre back at Spurs this season.

The proposed deal could eventually be worth up to £10m.

Nottingham Forest will be due 10% of the fee from a sell-on clause inserted when they sold Dawson to Spurs in 2005.

Rangers manager Mark Hughes moved to try to sign Dawson after his side were hammered 5-0 by Swansea at Loftus Road on the opening day of the season.

The defender, who has won four caps for England, was not a regular under former Spurs manager Harry Redknapp last season but is fit again after rupturing a ligament in his right ankle in March.

Sebastien Bassong, Dawson's former Tottenham team-mate, left Spurs earlier on Tuesday after agreeing a three-year deal with Norwich City.

I like it, I like it...If we can keep this guy fit, he is a quality player. England u21 international, and was being groomed as Spurs captain...

Think we need another CB and DM as well though...

In terms of quality he'll be by far the best defender we've signed, if he stays fit will be one of those players you'd want in the trenches with you...

So, it's either £3m, £5m (some newspapers), £7.5m possibly going up to £10m (BBC), £9m (SSN), £10m (Talkshite, I think) or any other number that you can possibly think of.

It seems that each media outlet has the same story but they all put a different figure on the fee. They then say "our sources say" and try and make out that they have different "sources" from the other papers/broadcasters when in fact they have just copied the story from someone else or have exactly the same source!

In reality, none of them actually know!

Pathetic really, but what else does one expect from the British media?

Fulham Chronicle who are generally pretty good, put it at about £5 mill. 'Alright sort of' player? Are you having a laugh, he'd be head and shoulders above any of our existing back line. Dawson and Mbia at Centre back would be sex piss!

    Good Signing..if he stays fit.

Now you can see why we kept Dyer, getting the medical staff up to speed quickly was important

I would have thought that MH was looking to strengthen in this area anyway but perhaps he was looking to get Samba in January but that shambles has made him panic slightly and Dawson became available at the right time. I don't believe he would have been considered as a potential buy this time last week. Daily Mail seem to think Sunderland & Stoke trying to hijack. A class act, perhaps at 10M a little high (if it is that much) but then i guess we have shown our cards.

I think most of us were agreed on the other thread that Dawson was not worth the higher end prices being quoted, when he has missed so many games with injury. But at £ 3 to £ 4 million, perhaps he is worth it.
