Cup Tie tactics, shefford, except it wasn't a cup tie. That decision baffled me. Hughes said we were chasing the game and he sends on a further chaser. Confused.com

No need to be patronising mate.
Having too many of the same kind of midfielders affects the whole team shape and that is what I was trying to put across. Hughes hasn't constructed the squad very well......yet!!

    Can't agree with that!
Our home form during the run in kept us up and Hughes must take some credit for that!
It really bugs me when people say that we only stayed up cos Bolton didn't win etc....we stayed up cos we (JUST) got enough points over the ENTIRE season!!

Weren't we already 0 - 3 down then? I thought he was trying to throw more players into attack to try and rescue the game, with SWP supposed to give more width on the right, which was at least a brave attempt and better than doing nothing! I was puzzled as to why he took off Hill and not Anton or Onouha who were a lot worse on the day than Hill, but suppose it was because he needed more speed at the back with only 3 clearish defenders left, and Hill is the slowest.

But my article didn't refer to the game...it was a comment on Hughes!

I was replying to a comment from Shefford, Col.

What is this 'my thread, my rules'?

I'm happy with Hughes, he and TF are turning us into the most forward thinking club in the country. But it won't all be beer and skittles. In fact we will hardly ever play skittles.

Bit unfair to start blaming the problem on a lack of right back. He might have been our fourth choice and we were chasing those first three down cul-de-sacs before getting Bosingwa. Also, Hughes won't be dealing with the contracts. People can't blame our board because the've done so much so it's easier to blame Hughes for not sorting it early enough (since he's now public enemy number one).

    Fair enough comment Matt.

I haven't been aware of that much unrest prior to Saturday (except calls for a CB and maybe CM) and no one has really questioned Hughes until the last 3 days. Park's appointment as captain is debatable although no-one can deny he leads by example. The old cliche of needing many captains on the pitch is true and the likes of Hill and Ferdinand should be telling those in front of them what they expect irrespective of whether or not they have the armband.

Agree to an extent....but I just think Park isn't vocal enough to be a Captain. I think it was a commercial decision and not a footballing one.

I look at the prediction competition and there was a unanimous cry of "comprehensive victory" including your 3-1. There weren't too many people stating "Hughes is tactically naive and is a long way off knowing his best formation" - that suggests that these doubts have surfaced (or resurfaced) in the last few days

Well of course they have!! We can only make a judgement once we've seen a game FFS!

Essentially, we're having this conversation based on one competitive match - can Cisse cover it up front with those attacking mids behind him/the dynamics of Park/Hoilett/Taarabt etc - that makes it reactionary IMO - it's a response to the observations of one game and the bits pieced together from the odd friendly where combinations of teams have been tested.

    That's fair!!

After this, we expect the firing squad to be lurking round the corner? What happens if the next one doesn't cut it within 5 games or do we give him the rest of the season with Hughes' squad and then give him 5 of the new season before pulling the trigger? This is Flavio-esque in its brutality.

I didn't suggest Hughes should go...I questioned whether Tony may start having doubts. It was a debate opener (Worked too!).
    [/B

So it's crazy to be calling for Hughes head after one game but woe betide him if he doesn't deliver in four games that he's not expected to get anything from? Should we do it? One answer:- "A huge conundrum when things really should be pretty settled!" - RangerCol [2012 - shortly after a freak result]

I didn't and never have called for Hughes's head!!

Let's not start bickering please. We are ALL entitled to our opinions and football is a game of opinions. From where I sit, MH still has a lot to prove. The game was not there for us to win or draw on Saturday when he swapped Hill for SWP, he should have done more at that stage to shore up the defence, not weaken it even more. I hope he is the right man to lead us up the table and into a side capable of challenging for honours. Sadly, I doubt that he is. Again all MY opinion.

    Col,

Firstly, thanks for reading and being open minded about my responses.

Secondly, perhaps I did misinterpret the "I'd never call for Hughes head after one game but....." part in which case I'm sorry. It DEFINITELY got the debate going though! ;)

I was prepared to give NW more time than TF and took a while to get used to Hughes. Now that I have, I'm not going to want him removed quickly.

I do buy into the vision and do reckon it'll sort itself out in the wash (although bedding in the rumoured 12 CBs we've been linked with today could take a while longer).

    Thanks again,

    Matt

Col, I'm not feeling the love for Hughes either, and I'm still waiting for us to play what I'd call well, under him.
