Why do we value our players on the 'reduced rail'?

Just looked at the attached article and noticed quote; “while Crystal Palace’s £9million-rated winger Wilfried Zaha is a contingency option should the Black Cats miss out on Johnson.”

£9million rated??? Ok I'm sure this is a gross over-estimation, but when Stewart was at his peak and scouts were sniffing, no-one on here or in the media seemed to be talking over £4million. So what's the difference between him and Zaha?
This seems to follow a tradition of City players being offered at very modest prices (Turner as the most extreme example) while other clubs demand a king's ransom.

Is this because of the 'unfashionable club' stigma and therefore our players can't be worth much?

Zaha would be sold for half that amount I would have thought and 2.5-3 million would have been a fair price for Cameron when he was at his peak

So you think Zaha is worth roughly £2million more than Stewart was at his peak.
Considering their records and ages are quite similar how do you explain this difference?
I'm not aiming to be argumentative BTW I'm genuinely confused.

For me Stewart has only ever had 4 or 5 good games in his career, Zaha has done it over a far longer period.

    Wilfred Zaha 2011/12 - 47 games, 9 goals, 7 assists(shots 63/on target 30).

    Cameron Stewart 2011/12 - 32 games, 2 goals, 1 assist(shots 8/on target 2).

Those are not similar records, not even close.

Cheers OLM, to be honest Craig I was probably being a bit kind to Cameron by valuing him @ £3million (whwn he was on form)!

I said when Stewart "was at his peak", not now.
At one point he was among the most sought after players in the division, but no-one seriously suggested he was worth anywhere near as much as Zaha is being touted for.

Yes but Zaha wont be bought for anywhere near 9 million, I would be surprised if anyone paid over 5 for him

I don't think Zaha is worth anything like £9m, but he's at least been consistently good, unfortunately Cameron hasn't been consistent at all, in fact his 'peak' that you've mentioned lasted about a month and that's why people aren't claiming he's worth a fortune. There's a talented player in there and if he gets his confidence back, then I'm sure interest in him will increase, but at the moment we'd be doing well to find anyone willing to match what Pearson offered last season.

I reckon if Zaha was a Hull City player he would go for about £1.5 to 2 million tops. Palace will probably get about £4million.

There is no justification to that comment other than you basing Hull City player sales on the Michael Turner situation when we were allegedly desperate for money

    We do it in reverse.
We pay Harrods prices for Primark goods.

To be fair I'm not. I honestly can't remember us selling anyone for a huge profit even going back to when we sold Keith Edwards to Sheff U for £100,000 (which wasn't that much even then).
We sold Billy Whitehurst to Newcastle for just over £200,000 after buying him for £2000 but that was a one-off.

We don't sell anyone for a huge profit because we haven't had a decent academy, which the likes of Crystal Palace do!

No they are not, Cameron's shots to goals ratio is noticeably better and his shots on target to goals ratio is 100%! Says it all!

Seriously though I'm not sure where you found those stats from but I can remember him making more than 1 assist last season and definitely remember him having more than 8 shots, he must have had at least at shots when we played Leicester at home in that game alone never mind the rest of the season! He definitely had more than 2 on target as he scored 2 goals as it is and made the keeper do a few saves at times. One particularly ferocious shot at the bottom corner that schmiecal did brilliantly to turn away vs Leicester sticks to mind.

Yep, we'd rather take a kid on loan to sit on the bench than give one of our own a try, and have done since Incan remember.

I think the problem is that you have to pay a premium to get players to go to unfancied clubs. A young player in particular may go to Man U for £1 million because he wants to go to Man U (and be able to tell girls he plays for Man U) but would want £2 million to go to (for example) Preston because he doesn't want to go there and sees no kudos in being able to say "I play for Prston".

The same applies the other way round. If a young player is at Hull and sees the opportunity to go to the bright lights (as he sees it) of Manchester or London he'll be more keen to go than to stay. The price goes down.

Basically Play for Man U you add £millions to your value, play for Hull City and you reduce your value by £ millions because buyers offer less.

Bummer but that's the way it is

I watched the full City vs Brighton game on tigersplayer last night and I was seriously impressed with Aluko, he's going to be worth a few million for sure, Cam has got to keep working, he showed glimpses.

and we shouldn't release McKenna, he played well and sweeps up what Koren misses. If Cairney can do the dirty stuff fine, but Evans is more likely at this point.

We sold Leon Cort for about £1.25m and he came on a Bosman.
