By Terry Phillips Aug 20 2012 Cardiff City are close to signing Queens Park Rangers centre-half Matthew Connolly. QPR manager Mark Hughes has accepted an undisclosed bid for Connolly, who is aiming to complete a hat-trick of promotions. Connolly, 24, was in the Rangers team who won the Championship title two years ago - and was on loan with Reading when they were crowned champions last season. Barnet-born Connolly is a former Arsenal trainee who had loan spells with Bournemouth and Colchester United before a £1m transfer from the Gunners to Rangers in 2008. He has made 116 League appearances for QPR. Manager Malky Mackay is preparing for City's League match at Brighton tomorrow as his recruitment department work to complete the Connolly deal. Hopefully means more coming in. Still plenty of time for signings and I do wonder whether they like the melodrama of last day frantic activity.
It should mean at least 1, possibly 2 CBs coming in now. Another forum says we made a move for Caulker and that would be a good loan.
Having won 2 consecutive promotions I hope we are getting a good fee for this Young Winner! Good luck Matt!
never really made the shirt his, Championship is his level, but thanks for the contribution to the championship winning side,
Good player and could have gone on to do well, except for what goes on in his head (confidence). Shame but we need to get people now to do a better job. good luck Matt
QPR accept Cardiff' bid for Matthew Connolly Bye Matthew for the record you and Gorkss were fantastic for us ... thank you and I think you were great for QPR
Hes the new Gorkss, gets promoted twice and is sold before he can play a game. usually Id say good luck for the 3rd time and I hope you end up playing in the PL but its Cardiff.
[sniff] Dropped like a stone - thanks guys!!! I always thought he was nearly there but not quite - just lacking a bit of consistency and confidence to realise his potential. Good luck to the other QPR Matt!
You wonder whether Hill will be next. Hughes has gone big for flair this transfer window, and ignored the need for some steel. There's barely a poster on this board that hasn't been crying out for at least one CB and probably another holding midfield player. Now we have 11 days to find someone. I just hope there are some irons in the fire. Tony F may be digging deep into his pocket in the last few days of August. It had just all seemed so calm and orderly up until Saturday...
Thanks matt con...i thought he was under-rated and could have become a better player. Tough job in his position but wish him all the best.. was a good player for us in the dark times !..good luck mate !
did he play well for you in the championship? he would be backup to turner and hudson, hopefully a player with the potential to improve.
Hi Swamp. Sorry we could not do you a favour on Saturday. Did they gloat at you as well as us? Connolly was variable. I think he had / has a confidence problem. If he could get his head right, he might well do a good job for you guys. Assuming Malky is a good manager, he may well do quite well under his care / encouragement.
He did very well right up until the crunch time of the season, then he seemed to turn to mush. He's a product of Wenger's academy so there's no doubting his ability. Its his mental toughness that there's a question mark over.
