Winning a cup means getting into Europe. We're targetting a strong league position so we can qualify for Europe. Both offer the same reward next season, difference being on brings a major honour, th other doesn't. I know what most players would prefer.

I'd rather sacrifice say, £5m in league prize money if it meant getting the Europa Cup (the run would recoup the league loss of earnings anyway).

Ten years down the line, finishing 5th and winning nowt will not be remembered.

Oh and just to point out, did you notice how despite a really poor (relative to them) league finish, no one has demanded out of Chelsea. Why's that? <ok>

Being a bit older i went for the F.A. Cup cos i just bloody well want to see us win it in my lifetime. I still remember the excitement of cup final day over the years and despite it being a bit diluted nowadays i still really want to see us win it someday. Was a close thing with the Europa tho, would also love to win that to make a statement to Europe. Frankly i seem to be in the minority in that my third choice would be the League cup (or whatever its title is now) as we have never won that trophy yet and still with a Wembley Final and Europa qualification it would like any major trophy win go down in history and be remembered forever unlike a top 5 finish.
Having said all this i like most others was still very pleased with last season and a repeat would be still considered pretty good.
None of this is deluded either as we finished top 5 last season and all know that given the required effort, support and luck almost any decent team can potentially win any cup they compete for. No-one is suggesting we will, just that we would like to.
Anyway, no reason why we cant do top 5 or 6 AND win a cup.

And what set of fans wouldn't like to win something? It's what we go to the games for, to see our team win. Picking up a trophy along the way would be a nice bonus.

The are quite a few clubs now offering similar wages to Chelsea. I think their players will feel more accomplished than Arsenal ones for example, we can't stop players leaving for higher wages but I don't think finishing midtable and winning a trophy would be a breaking point.

no we would win the cup and the top clubs would finally come in and our best players would be away. The quality we have now want european football and for one or two champions league in the next season or two. I suppose we might get in europr via a cup win but the more I think about it we wont win anything anyway. Just do well in the league and hope for a lucky run in the cup and see where we are come feb

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying give up in the league and focus on the cups, that's way too risky. Just saying if given a hypothetical choice I'd take a cup and think the players would too.

This is the place for idle musings, I'm leaving Pardew and co to come up with the actual game plan. I feel like I may have come across a little ranty, be assured I'm not having a go. <hug>

Anyone who prioritizes finishing above the mackems over winning a cup is an idiot.

Definitely need to extend the Northumbria Seniors Cup into the 'NE Topdogs Cup' (sponsored by Winalot).

    Pot 1
    Newcastle, Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Hartlepool

    Pot 2
    Gateshead, Darlington, Blyth, Berwick

    Unseeded
    Whitley Bay, Bedlington, Durham etc.

Unseeded teams in a knockout competition until just 8 remain.

Four groups of four (one from Pot 1, one from Pot 2, two unseeded).

Fixtures are drawn at random as sides play eachother just once. Top two from each group enter knockouts until a champion is decided.

These are the 'North East Top Dogs', winning this means you can wear a little picture of a terrier on your kits next season, ala Champions League stars.

    Emailing the FA now.
