IMO Main Personality 1) Wiggins (Stand out Contender...he has become the 1st Briton to win the TDF, inspiring a generation of new road cyclists, and won Olympic Time-Trial Gold, and also for leading out Cavendish down the Champs d'Elysee...and also becoming Britain's highest number of olympic medal holder; 7) 2) Murray (winning Olympic Gold in the Greatest Era of Men's Tennis beating Djokovic and Federer to get it while playing 3 extra matches while Federer was resting for Sunday and then playing straight after that final...may have just broken his Major Final mental block), Olympic Silver (Mixed Doubles) and Runner-Up @ Wimbledon 3) Hoy (becoming GB's top Olympian with 6 Golds overall, and 2 in these games: recogition of a fantastic career and such an inspiration to us all) Young Personality 1) Trott (2 Olympic Golds and 2 World Championship Golds, still only 20) 2) Jade Jones (Taekwondo Olympic Gold)
Have to agree. Don't forget Wiggin's 'Le gentleman' moment. It is sports PERSONALITY. Don't forget Pendleton. Also agree about the young sports personality, also Trott is fit!
Come on you lot; Jessica Ennis did 7 different sports!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Andy Murray the English hater?????? Who only wants to be BRITISH when there's something in it for him???? Can't disagree with Wiggins though, top top bloke! ILD OTBC
I view Sport`s Personality as a celebration of a that person overcoming significant hurdles in their quest to glory, the determination to succeed even when you`ve been beaten to the floor, the excellence of the individual`s talent, etc. Ryan Giggs I lost my respect for when he shagged his brother`s wife...can you imagine him being nominated for a personality award: mind boggling! What a role model for our Nation`s kids...not Jess Ennis...she`s a WC and an Olympic Gold medallist, who gives (as the overwhelming favourite so she bloody well should have won it`s hardly a surprise), we had 29 sets of them this London 2012. Well done for her, but this is about sustained acheivement, and while I would vote her No.5 after Mo Farah at No.4, she isn`t yet at the same level of achievement as Wiggins, Murray or Hoy. Murray has been always in the top 4 of men`s tennis in recent years, which is worthy in itself, however having also been beaten 4 times in Grand Slam finals, he keeps coming back with more determination, he is without a doubt one of the fittest on tour (again motivation to beat the best), and won Olympic Gold against the GOAT in a best of 5 sets match, who was bidding for the last title not on his list, who is also the current No.1, and he did it in style beating not only Djokovic in the Semi on Friday PM but then after 2 more doubles matches on Saturday giving him no time to rest, before playing 2 matches (both finals) on the Sunday. It is hard to think of another British athlete who has been unjustly accused of choking (he was playing against Federer, Nadal and Djokovic in the Greatest Era), suffered so much heartbreak (would have won multiple slams if in a different Era) or had so much pressure put on him by the media ("bidding to come the first British winner since Neanderthal X in 10,000 BC) and lastly, been accused time and time again of English-loathing when that was miscontrued by the Sun from a joke comment, as banter about Scotland not having a team in the World Cup. Anyone who watched saw his pride in playing for Team GB and the fact that he was singing the National Anthem proves it.
So Jessica Ennis didn't have to overcome anything? Just train and be the best at 7 different events that's all!! She only broke 4 personal bests after all! Murrays been a loser, he might be top 4 but he's NOT the best. If Nadal had been fit he would have slaughtered Murray. Federer is on the way down that's the only reason Murray beat him. You say he could have won multiable grand slams in another era, which era would that be, one where everyone else was crap. He's playing here and now and has to deal with it, he won't ever be the best out of that 4! I have no respect for Murray; for what he said about us 'the English', can you imagine the ****e storm if a English athlete had said that about the Scottish? He's a cry baby, I didn't see him crying when he won. Sorry mate I can't stand the man, and he has NO personality, that's what the award is supposed to be about!!! ILD OTBC
Got it in one, wasn't sure if I'd made myself clear or not! I don't want to get into a row with you as it's clear we have differing views, I guess we'll just have to leave it there! ILD OTBC
Thanks 'kickitoff' this can be a lonely place sometimes if you have a different view to the majority! ILD OTBC
