  2. Everyone is writing off our chances of a top 4 finish. As they always do.

Lawro is at his wumming best. In his pre-match prediction, he writes: "Tottenham are more likely to challenge for the top four than Newcastle, but ultimately I don't think they will get there."

His most hilarious comment is: "Villas-Boas was a bit unlucky at Chelsea."

As in, "Hitler was a bit of a Nazi."

    <doh>

    What a tit!

Yet, somehow, I have missed him and his asinine comments.

Doesn't have the same effect IMO. 7th or lower isn't as demeaning as just saying 13th.

By the way, i reckon you'll finish about 8th-9th. Liverpool, Newcastle, Chelsea are stronger than you, plus you have that insanely high defensive line, leaving you vulnerable to counterattacking sides like Wigan.

OnlyOneDB - I haven't see you post for ages and you are just as negative as ever.

Didn't you spend all last season saying we wouldn't make top 4.

    ATM, I reckon 6/7th

but will wait till after the first game post window to predict as is my normal practice - i like to know who we have on board and at least one game from the 'proper squad' before making a guess.

I hope you guys don't mind me butting in, but I think you'll finish 5th (maybe 6th). If you can get in a top striker or two, a new playmaker to replace Modric (or do you not need one?) wing cover, and a new keeper (?), then you definitely have the squad too finish top 4, but until then, I can see City, United, Chelsea, Arsenal, and maybe Liverpool or Newcastle finishing above you, but you'll probably come 5th, baring a massive injury crisis, or AVB is ****ter than Chelsea fans want him to be!

    My prediction:

    1. Man City
    2. Man United
    3. Tottenham
    4. Arsenal
    5. Chelsea
    6. Liverpool
    7. Newcastle

I'm changing my position from 4th to 3rd, based on the realisation that Chelsea don't have a hope with that clown Di Matteo in charge, also too many new signings in the wrong positions, Torres being a donkey, Terry and Lampard being past it etc

  9. 'Pool or Newcastle. Are you kidding?

    Based on what?

'Pool are worse than they were last season, what with the change of manager. Do you really think that Brendan Rodgers is going to turn out to be a "top 5" manager?

As for the Toon, they punched well above their weight last season. To suggest that they will repeat that two years in succession is against the odds.

So, no, I cannot see either of those two teams finishing above us. And if they do, both Levy and AVB should be sacked.

I did say that you would probably finish above them, and by that I meant 90% certainty :p But BR can hardly be worse than Queen Kenny can he? And as Newcastle showed last season, it's possible to massively over-achieve if you have the right attitude, so they could do it again, unlikely I know, or Liverpool could do it and finish top 5. Also, not wumming or anything, but you have Defoe and Kane as striker options, and your only wing cover is Townsend (?) So with a few injuries to key players, it is possible. But like I started by saying, I'm 90% sure you'll finish atleast 5th.

to be honest this 'over-achieved' tag is a bit misleading and giving people a false sense of security - it's basically bandied about by pundits who didn't know how good our players were cos they didn't research them trying to cover their own arses when they proven wrong. Pundits by their very nature are very noisy and get their voices heard and a lot of them were very vocal about our relegation prospects because we replaced some average players with some players they'd never heard of - basically ones that hadn't played in England much or been linked with the CL clubs. These players of course included CL regular Cabaye, 1 in 2 striker Ba etc.

it's not really possible to over-achieve in a league where everyone plays everyone, you can over (or under) achieve in individual games but that's just individual games - over 38 it levels out a bit, this is why it's such a good format for competition (in fact you hear a similar thing said about long format snooker games, five set tennis games, four day cricket and golf games and so on)

Newcastle did well because we employ tough negotiators and a scouting system staffed by people who really know their footballers (unlike those who are not good enough for anything other than punditry). We didn't do well because we bought a load of cheap gambles who collectively played better than they should, consistently enough over a whole season to finish fifth in a very tough league. The league placings really are a reflection of quality, more so than cup winners. Conversely there is only one thing you can say about a relegated side, that they simply weren't good enough.

Anyway, here's to a good game today, and a good season for you guys, my opinion is that there won't be many points between our sides come May and I think today will probably be a draw.

Really? I've not seen anything like that, infact I've just seen the guys on Soccer Saturday coat us off for 10 minutes without even an attempt to see what might go well for us.

Not really, they're content to cast us as also-rans and spend more time talking about Liverpool.

Spot the irony in that one...

I did, also said that Ade wouldn't score more than 10 league goals for us! and then I had to run across the M1 naked for being so foolish....

so when I got out of the hospital AND a spell at her Majesty's pleasure I found that it had all been for nought anyways, got 4th and still didn't qualify for the CL! So no SHINY new striker or replacement midfielder worth their salt will be signing for us

makes me wish I hadn't bothered....

This is a crazy thread to be running at the start of the season .

Try it again after about 15 games and it may be of relevance.

You had a bad start today but so what ?

I still think you will easily finish above the bin dippers.

  20. I should think so! They got thrashed by a side that is a favourite for relegation.
