Is it just me who thinks that perhaps signing Barrett signing wasn't particularly necessary? Seeming as we already had four centre backs in the shape of Frampton, Flanagan, Essam & Davies is he really needed? I could understand him being signed last season due to our injury problems, however the fitness of the players has already vastly improved and I feel we wont suffer from the injuries that we did last season (touch wood). I suppose in the longer run when Flanagan returns to MK Dons then he will be more required but I am worried that it will halt or stunt the progress of Connor or Callum within the first team. Mean I would most certainly rather have a younger more hungry centre back with lots of potential playing than perhaps someone who is coming towards the twilight of their career and according to Bournemouth fans has already "lost his legs".

    Peoples thoughts?

No you are not the only one that has been thinking that, hence why I have been keeping quiet on the other thread.

I do see what you mean about the number of centre backs but I think we did need someone else with experience at the back yeah it would have been better if he was a right back or left back. Also with Flanagan only at the club till January I do see the logic in signing him. My only worry is how much are Essam and Davies going to play, I am mainly worried that Essam may not play much which would be a shame.

Would rather have players in permanently than a team of loan players, Flanagan is only on loan (may have a recall clause?) We would all be moaning if due to injuries we become thin on the ground! Does'nt matter if the fitness has improved you just cant help some injuries/bad tackles etc...

Hoadie, so why did you not say that in the other thread? You are so inconsistent in your comments it is unbelievable. Did you not just choose Barrett in your starting line up and drop Essam!!!! as I say unbelievable, I just cannot take anything you say seriously sometimes. If you said it all from the off, I would not say anything but you chop and change with whatever way the wind is blowing. Let's just cast last season's best defender off (not counting Jackman) and replace him with Barrett, what a joke.

Does anyone know if Flanagan can play Right back or Left back if so maybe that would explain why Barrett has been signed.
My only problem with Barrett is that he is only 5ft 10" which is small for a centre back.

No I choose Barrett in the team as my team is what I think Martin Allen will choose not what I want as it would be totally different. Evans Essam Barrett Jackman would be my back line but I am not the manager.

If you look at the Myles Weston and Adam Barrett thread you will see that I have said who I would play in defence my starting line up thread is the prediction of what will start.

You always have many alternative options Hoadie. On that other thread I made ONE post which was a Brentford link to Myles Weston, no one needs me to explain why I did that and even you managed to recognise it. You made four comments. Then The Gills PegLeg at least has the balls to question it and you come along and say...'I do see what you mean'. Hoadie the reason you knew I would be happy with a left sided winger is because I am consistent, whereas I don't have a clue what you want.

ps. also I haven't forgot our little argument over Frampton last season and now you have the cheek to tell us all about his experience. That's a bit like me turning round and saying Joe Martin is a good player <laugh>

And yeah thats the only reason that I can come up with that he would be required, other than that I really dont see the point of him being with us.

i think martin allen has a holding midfield role lined up for callum davies and won't want him at centre back like we would assume.

I must admit I did contemplate it whilst producing the article bus wasn't really sure how to fit it in. I haven't seen the pre-season matches to be able to determine as to how he played there. Although I don't particularly want us to form a situation like Man United have with Phil Jones and try to play someone in different positions to his best of centre back. But if Davies looks set to become a decent Defensive Mid, then he's more than welcome to play there!

A really unnecessary signing. The average age of the squad is spiralling up after much good work last year to reduce it.

I agree with those who think that Essam may get shut out too much ( I think that even H_B might be one of the consenters )
