I find this comment really interesting from Anita in The Journal this morning:

“I know of Sir Bobby Robson, Alan Shearer.

“These are great figures in world football.”

It goes to show that even though they are quite firmly in the past as far as NUFC are concerned these great 'world football' figures are still working as a draw for NUFC. It goes some way to counter-act the assertion that no-one has heard of us outside the NE which I have always thought is wrong, particularly because of the two afore-mentioned men.

I think in some ways that this needs to be considered when assessing our fifth place finish and when putting it in context. It's probable that we are still exerting a draw for players of Cabaye and Cisse's calibre because of men like these and how they have helped us be well known around the world. I wonder if the same could have happened to some other clubs without recent associations such as these, even if they had Carr, Pardew, Ashley etc working so efficiently for them. No disrespect to Swansea, Norwich or Bolton, but would the same players have moved to them ?

It's interesting to read a player directly giving credit to Sir Bobby Robson and Alan Shearer as draws to our club.

though i had a chuckle at this:

“They showed me a video about the club and it was good to see that. The team really wants to play attractive football and that is my style.”

    youtube perhaps ? :)

That was a joke, I hardly think they'd have one of Tash's vids to show him.

Mentioned this before once: was chatting with a fellow in Madrid. He said he was a "gato" which literally means cat but is slang for a born and bred Madrid resident. I said I was a "hurraca", which means magpie. Took him less than a second to say "Ah, Alan Shearer".

Wasn't more than 25 as well

I can remember going to Amsterdam in about 2005 and I had numerous dutch people chatting to me about Newcastle and it was always Sir Bobby and Shearer who they spoke about, and always would bring up Euro 96 when Shearer smashed two past them!! Well I would bring it up!!

Probably used to play Champ Manager when he was a kid. That Alan Shearer bloke was decent, then again so was Cherno Samba and Tonton Zola Moukoko..... <whistle>

Jussi Kujala was the man. 250K from Ajax. Probably the best player on the game eventually. That was an early Champ Man though. I started off with it when you had to buy all the leageus on seperate discs! <laugh> I wonder how many peoples educational results dipped as result of Champ Man. You knew you should be revising but thhat flashy strip across the centre of the screen when you scored was just so damn addictive!

I never used to finish on a defeat or even a draw. I got it into my head that it meant you'd lose the first one when you went back on. As you can see I lost all sense of normality/sanity playing that game. <laugh>
