If you like 'The Wire', another good series to get into is 'The Shield'. I bought the box set of the first season to take on holiday with me a few years ago, and was hooked.
The Wire is the undisputed best show ever made, Sopranos is second. It ends by Tony turning supergrass and unfortunately you never get to see his daughters tits.
you missed the incest episode so ... carmella and meadow munchin on each others piss flaps for a good 20 mins
The Wire is behind the Sopranos, as is every TV show ever made. The Yanks make the best TV. Dexter Deadwood Rome The Walking Dead Fringe Boardwalk Empire Band Of Brothers The Pacific Battlestar Galactica (the newer one) The West Wing Murder One Potentially "Game of Thrones" could be as good as these too. And the list goes on.
32,000 votes at 9.6 for The Wire http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0306414/ to 39,000 votes at 9.4 for The Sopranos says you are wrong. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0141842/
I suspect that poll may be influenced by Wire Diehards Mick. Wire is a great show but it was weak at times and just a bit slow on plot development (at times) whereas the Sopranos never ceased to amaze me with it's writing. The story is always going somewhere even if it is in a huge arc 10 episodes down the line. What really swings it for me is the humour of the Sopranos, not to say the Wire was not funny at times, it was just very very bleak. That's one of it's strengths too but if it was not so depressing then I might have agreed to a point. For me personally though The Sopranos is better.
mick you cant believe internet polls in fairness ...i voted for the wire 200 times and never even seen 1 episode
Sorry the wire was 9.7 Over 30,000 people voting for each says it's a significant gage of popular opinion rather than just a few fan boys.
The problem is Mick I doubt you will find many Wire Fans who watched it when it was actually airing. Most (I would say almost all) saw the boxed sets one after another, that tends to influence one's rating of a programme/series. Most fans of the Sopranos stuck with it for about 8 years from start to finish. For my money The Wire season 3 was every bit as good as the Sopranos at it's best, that's my problem, the Wire was not consistently brilliant. Anyway, where's Moltisanti when I need back up?
My problem with The Wire was that I couldn't understand what half the people were saying. It seems you didn't get cast on that show unless you had 'fearsome mumbler' on your CV. I ended up watching it with the subtitles on. I don't have a problem with subtitles per se (I'm currently watching the Danish version of 'The Killing' with Dutch subtitles), you just don't expect to need them when the programme's supposed to be in your own language.
I watched the Sopranos in a box set after the Wire. Sopranos was great, but the Wire was just much deeper - like an epic book that needed every part of your concentration. I didn't so much enjoy the last one or two seasons of the Sopranos as much as well
