He can play in midfield as well though can't he?

Precisely. It was believed he was wanted as he could also offer cover when defending against counter attacks and assisting Fox.

The Ramirez thing could be a long shot, so maybe Adkins wants Buttner for the left and Phillips for the tight?

Why do people keep on going on about we need a CB?, then when we are linked to a player who is not a CB say the same thing?.
I think Adkins knows we need a CB but that does not stop us buying players in different positions.

Of course, Adkins knows much more about the team and where it needs strengthening, I like most fans, think that we need a new CB.

Maybe, he just saw the reported bid and thought it was a done deal.... I still think he will be a Saints player, I don't care how we get him if it annoys Holloway the club deserves some sort of reward... :)

Also, on the subject of annoying people, couldn't help but notice the Gaston Ramirez rumour on the Daily Mail site, the comments from other teams is brilliant. This is when I really want us to sign a player of his class just to stick it down these so called 'bigger clubs' throats, despite the chances of signing him being quiet slim.
Blackpool could have accepted it but it hasn't have been reported to the press yet. Phillips could have told him about it.

But it's that obvious why do people need to keep saying it?. Next it'll be i'm glad we signed Ramirez but i wish we got a CB instead.

We signed Jean-Armel Kana-Biyik ages ago just not announcing it so people can keep on.

Everyday that goes by with no sign of a new CB, it´s normal to become more worried and impatient. It's the position we are most weakest in and considering that we are playing Man City this Sunday, it´s a cause for concern. I imagine Adkins is as impatient as us to get a new CB in but for some reason or another it hasn't happened yet.

I'm not concerned at all, not really looking at the Man City game as the game we will have our finished squad.

I didn't say we would have our finished squad by the City game but I thought we would have at least one CB in by now. From day one of the transfer market we knew that one of the positions we needed to strength (pretty urgently) was at CB, and now that over 6 weeks have past ,and we still have no new CB, it's quite worrying.
I'm sure we will have strengthened that position by the time the transfer window shuts but we are heading into the season with only 2 decent CB's. It's great that we have signed the players we have so far and they are quality additions...but just like we forked out 6.5m on Rodriguez, I would like us to fork out that kind of money on a CB too.

If Buttner plays left midfield, then I'm guessing he would be quite a defensive one hence being played as a left back last season, and that would mean our left is very defensive. In contrast, Clyne and Phillips on the right is quite attacking.

We need back up for Fox anyway's, plus Buttner could put pressure on Fox to preform better.

Buttner was always a winger until Vitesse pushed him back a bit this season just gone!

He describes himself as a winger or attacking wing-back. Have a look at some clips online, he doesn't look like a 'defensive winger' so to speak.
