This whole RvP thing got me thinking. Is it a good or bad deal? It's certainly a lot to pay for a player with such an injury record. A player who has only had 1 truly outstanding goalscoring season and as has been said above will have little/no sell-on value. Therefore on balance it's a big gamble. However, if he scores 12-15 goals this season and raises the global shirt sales by say 12% then, on an annualised basis, it's a no brainer good deal.

He does help answer United's striker problems but it's not there that united have their greatest problems.

2. If he raises shirt sales by that much then fair enough (although that wouldn't cover the £60m+ package he'll cost) but if the 12% in RVP shirt sales is in liaison with a drop in sales for other player names then IMO that is pointless as fans are clearly just buying a shirt with another players name on. The vast majority of the time, this is what happens.

For example, I used to get a name on my shirt every season, sometimes on both the home and away shirts. At the beginning of each season I would just look at the squad list and decide which players I wanted. When Torres joined I chose him but that doesn't not mean the club gained my £10 for shirt printing because they signed Fernando, I would have done it anyway but with another name.

PS - You'll be pleased to know I've grown out of having names on my shirts now <ok>

Just go to the Arsenal board. Or to the United board an the last 10ish pages of the transfer thread. They're just upset about the deal, but they're claiming he only scores so many goals because the rest of the team was so good. Absolutely nothing to do with RVP. <ok>

You just use the 'QUOTE=' and '/QUOTE' (both in []) again, so it appears as a separate quote. I think you have to copy and paste if you're using more than one quote (like in my sig.)

According to the Daily Fail it`s not £24 mil upfront.

United are understood to have agreed a £15m downpayment for last season’s Footballer of the Year and Players’ Player — who scored 30 Premier League goals for last season. That will rise to £24m depending on appearances. Van Persie is expected to sign a four-year contract worth over £200,000 a week.

6. And it begins. I've heard four or five different payment plans this morning alone...<doh>

Can't have it both ways. End of the day, it is going to cost £24m. End of.

RVP is going to be great for them... when they get ripped open in the Champion's League because Vidic is injured, Rio is out/****/spent, Smalling or Jones have to cover right back, Evra is injured, Rafael is playing...

Such a waste when you consider their problems at the back.

9. I think their defense is fine, yes they have some injury prone players back there but they have plenty of numbers too. Their central midfield is in need of recruitments and has been far a while. Maybe RVP signing means that Rooney drops into the hole and becomes part of a midfield three? They've also signed Kawagaga (sp) and have Cleverley returning to the side.

PS - I don't understand the praise for Carrick after last nights game, I thought he was distinctly average at best, again! Oh, and why the **** did he have the captains armband on? No one that refuses to join up with the squad should be wearing it! It should have been given to Cahill.

We had the second best defensive record in the league last season ? I don't think we have problems at the back at all <ok>

It's fine when you're playing Stoke and Wigan, but you lost the title in part due to conceding 6 against City, 4 against Everton.

Also, you might face Barca or Madrid or even a Munich/Juve/PSG in the CL. Would you rather have signed a world class full-back?

Why will it cost £24 mil end of?
If a large portion of that money is based on appearances and he is such an injury prone player, according to most on here, why will we have to pay any more than our initial outlay?
As you point out, you can`t have it both ways.

If you pay him 150,000 per week it'll end up costing over 60M I think.

You know.... conspiracy theories and all that.... I think Fergie is planning on going, and this is a "scorched earth" policy to leave the team in total desolation, and the owners with a massive wage bill on a 4 year contract. If it pays off, Fergie thinks RVP can win him the league and the Euro, if it fails, Fergie leaves, and gives the next manager an absolute headache of being stuck with a crocked player that is on megabucks. It is certainly a case of all your eggs in one basket.

Don't go there, he is a freaking nut bar, he just spouts ****e all the time. He's like the Black Knight in Python, you can tear him a new one, and he thinks he is winning.

It's a good deal for Arsenal. £20m + for a player who didn't want to play for them and was in the last year of his contract. Man Utd could have easily waited until January and got him for half that. It's the wages I can't get past. 220k a week on a 4 year deal... 4 years for a 29 year old!!! that means that is RVP gets injured, he'll still be paid that, if at 33 he is still at united he'll stlll be on at least £220k

£220k a week for a 33 year old is mental
