I'd probably start getting excited by the semi final, but I really don't see winning it as a big deal. It'd be a great day out if we got to the final, but winning it doesn't really do a lot for the team. It's not held in high regard, and the big teams don't take it seriously. Personally I'd like to see it scrapped or turned into some sort of U21 tournament.
Yeah I'm not a fan of the League Cup. But hey ho, Stevenage away will be tricky enough. Let's not go counting our chickens too early.
It is refreshing to see everyone calling it the League Cup, rather than the other name which I refuse to type. Give yourselves a pat on the back for refusing to be influenced by the horrible marketing tactics.
In the time I remember watching football, it has had three names - the Worthington Cup, the Carling Cup and now the Captial One Cup. The Capital One Cup just sounds wrong, it's like it doesn't want to have credibility. And the competition itself isn't worth my time.
Winning games is always good for morale. And don't say it doesn't matter....Arsenal fans were gutted not to win it. Remember how winning the JPT made our first season in League 1 feel like a success.
I agree with Fran, what would you remember more in 20 years, finishing 16th or winning the League cup. For instance, in 2003 we reached the FA cup final. Without the aid of google or wikipedia, where did we finish in the league that season?
Totally agree with Fran and Wise, after all a trophy's a trophy. You don't get anything for finishing 17th in the league and after one or two seasons it'll mean nothing while a trophy will still mean something years afterwards. It's like when Birmingham won the Carling Cup, a lot of people were saying "Ooh, I think Birmingham fans would have taken finishing 17th in the league and not winning the cup". Personally, if I was a Birmingham fan and that was the choice, I'd have gone for the Carling Cup without a doubt, as Wise says, who remembers the team finishing 17th in the league? The Premiership's not the be all and end all anyway.
It's one of only 2 ties featuring a Premier League side away to a team outside the top two divisions (the other being Yeovil v West Brom), so may have a chance of being on the telly.
8th? I'd take a decent league position over a League Cup win. I'm far more entertained by the FA Cup, and would be even more so if it was the only cup.
I enjoy Saints on TV in theory, but in practice I'm a quivering wreck. Might be able to stand a cup match though as not so important.
Fair point, but, although winning the League Cup would give you silverware and a trip into Europe, the financial rewards of finishing 17th in the Premier League are far far higher, obscene as that may be. I wonder how many Birmingham fans would swap their League Cup win two seasons ago with a place at the top table.
Avoiding relegation is far more important than any cup, but assuming we are safe a cup win would make the season seem very successful.
