http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...n-Rodgers-promises-prudence-at-Liverpool.html Something we have lacked for the last few years, this may mean missing out on players such as Gaston Ramirez at the moment, as his agent is a ****ing money greed prick, but I trust Brendan and he certainly as my backing as I believe he will do great with us, maybe not instantly but we will definitely make an improvement to last season and build a foundation for the coming seasons.
A lot of us have been saying for years that some players now come to Liverpool and think they've made it. Think players should just sign on a basic that rises wit appearances and results (including trophies), and you don't get Gerrard type wages until you've had a Gerrard type career.
2 x 26 comapred to 6 x 100... multiply rodgers spending by 3 and you get 78 mil.... in the end can we really say allen is so much better than henderson or borini is that good? We got value out of some spending (enrique, suarez, even adam) and others as we all could tell day one (carroll and downing) were awful buys. I think trashing kenny to big up rodgers is wrong. let rodgers stand on his own and judge him not by what someone else did but what he does. Let me be clear, enrique and suarez were bargains, henderson will be seen as one IMO. Bellamy had guys unhappy this week leaving. Even though i don't rate adam on iota it was indeed a not unreasonable price paid. So we come to this carroll and downing. Had carroll been 20mil not 35 people wold not even mention him... downing was never worth it. All in all if RODGERS buys 6 players and gets 4 right he'll be doing well as would all managers. The fact is kenny rebuilt a squad which was relegation fodder in large parts. rodgers has to rebuilt the mentality and only add to this squad. hell he even rates downing! I am firmly of the belief that to have success rodgers has to get the football right and build on what kenny did.... didn't paisley build upon shankely's work? is it demeaning to paisley to say that NOPE. Why? Cos if rodgers has success then within 5 years he'll probably have to rebuild his team totally anyway naturally (like paisley in 1981?) I think he will only have success by making kenny's players work for it, play his game and then add to it.
I can see why he was hired and such a good fit for FSG and am pleased he seems to be working in a sustainable way for the club. I think we go into the season with real optimism but also assured that our club is being run well and is secure. To be in a position were there is this optimism and a secure footing is superb given where we were a couple of years ago. The success will come and I am now more happy that the academies have a real purpose and hopefully prominent when developing the team. Clubs will always have to buy because despite everything, in any walk of life, there are always "naturals" who do it a bit better but all fans need to get out the mindset that spending money will assure success. Only have to recall the talk not long ago about us being docked points if we went into receivership and look at Rangers to know what can happen. United seem to be muddling through but a couple more seasons of mediocrity and they will have to restructure I am sure. http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/...-to-grab-first-chance-of-an-exit-8038685.html I am confident the success will come and when it does we'll look at the silverware and the club balance sheet and be proud of the clubs work ethic, not through a cheski or city suggar daddy.
Were Downing and Carroll and awful buys though or did they just disappoint? Jordan Henderson was a massive disappointment although he was played out of position for a massive part. I believe all three have a role to play when used properly. When Rafa arrived in 2004, he made players perform, and all he did was add a few players to make them perform. Signings players for whether its £2 million or £20 million is a risk. One of Liverpools brightest performers in pre-season has been Jonjo Shelvey who Rafa signed from Charlton for £1.7 million. He's taken time to adjust and even had a spell out on loan, and that loan spell has seen him improve 200%. He's far better now than he was before he went to Blackpool. Glen Johnson was a player that Kenny improved. Martin Skrtel in the last 18 months has gone from a good defender who was slightly suspect into one of the premierships best centre backs. I would rather see players be a work in progress and improve gradually than do it for a season and then.....nothing. However the other side of the coin is having to carry players. You may be able to carry one or two..but like Liverpool last season they had to carry five. The second season may help the likes of Henderson, Downing and Carroll prove their worth.
Writing off Downing and Carroll so soon? Let's look back a few years to when everyone was saying Lucas was useless. At least Downing and Carroll have shown improvement over the last few months, Adam has been progressively getting worse.
I don't know if Carroll will ever justify even £20M. £15M maybe. Let's face it, that transfer was a huge mistake and it cost Kenny in the end. We shouldn't have bought him then. If Kenny wanted him he should have waited until the summer.
Then we only would have had Suarez and Bellamy up front. Bellamy couldn't handle more than a few games in a row and Suarez would have been banned with no backup.
We bought Bellamy in the summer. Carroll didn't feature heavily in that half of the season anyway. Man City was his only notable game.
True, so it would have only been Suarez, had we not signed Carroll. Kuyt had done well while Carroll was injured, but he was anonymous in a few games.
Kuyt and Suarez played well and Carroll was mostly injured. We still had N'Gog as well. Don't get me wrong, when Andy is playing I want him to do well most of all, and I defended him constantly last season - getting a lot of stick in the process... But - and it's a big but - I wish we'd never bought him.
Some people just need time to grow and shine. He could still come good, maybe not to the figure of being worth £35m but he can still play a big part in future. Lucas got tore to shreds a few years ago and now it seems he is held in such a high regard, part of our downfall last season was his injury.
All in all, I though Carroll played well on Sunday. Like he wanted to prove a point to BR and answer Sammi. He got into some very good positions, Adam should have passed to him at one point but put it out wide...Carroll was clearly pissed off. Also charged down play and did that great tackle by the corner flag.
I'm 50/50 over Carroll. I can see the benefits if he stays but I wouldn't be crying if he left. However, I would be annoyed if we don't make anymore signings as a result of not selling Carroll (lack of cash?)
