Ferdinand's argument was that it's ok to do it in the heat of the moment, just after you've scored a goal, when everyone's attention is on the match, and when everyone is still 100% focused on beating the opponent. But Balotelli did it at the end of the game, when the victory was complete and all the other City players were shaking hands with the United players and applauding their own fans. And it wasn't an emotional release like Neville's madd little display, it was a deliberate attempt to provoke the United fans and be a prize twat.

Personally I think that's a fair point - can you imagine if Gary Neville had waited until full time and then strolled around in front of the Kop waving his badge and laughing at the Liverpool fans? He'd have started a riot! But Ferdinand was still a knob to kick off about it - the smart thing to do would have been to ignore Balotelli and left him standing there like a lemon. Much like Dalglish did with Wenger <ok>

Yeah, Swarbs, the intent and venom displayed was entirely different.

Also, the moon is made of cheese.

What's your point? The actions of both were remarkably similar:

But like I said, in my opinion there's a difference between celebrating a goal and taking the piss after a victory. Neville was still a twat for doing what he did, but it was more of a heat of the moment thing whereas Balotelli's was a deliberate planned attempt to be a dick.

Wouldn't you have been more pissed off with Neville if he'd waited until full time and then paraded around in front of the Kop like this:

I'd have seen very little difference. Like you said, they were both remarkably similar. You're reaching to defend your club. Admirable but a big stretch.

If there's no heat of the moment having just beaten your arrogant rival to a final then you shouldn't be there in the first place.

It was a wind-up. Buy some Kevlar and try to stop giving the impression Mancs can dish it out but can't take it.

Fair enough. I doubt most loyal Koppites would have felt the same tho'.

And I don't know how heat of the moment Balotelli's actions would have been - the United fans were behind Hart's goal in the second half, and when the final whistle blew he was in United's half, so much closer to his own fans than ours.

And I'm not defending my club. As I already said, Neville acted like a first class twat back in '06, and Rio and Anderson acted like twats on Saturday. I just think Balotelli was a bigger twat than Neville was. My original post wasn't defending Rio, it was just answering crazyhorse's question.

Didn't Neville run the length of the pitch? Adebayor got a suspended two-match ban and a £25,000 fine for that and he was the scorer; Neville was fined £5000, right? And didn't Nev do the same thing as a sub against City? Hardly heat of the moment when you're on the bench.

We can't exactly defend what we criticised Neville for. I'm sure Balotelli is just as nice in person as the half-boy half-rat is.

Your heat of the moment argument isn't going to help explain the post-match damage to the Utd dressing room, though:

    You provided a balanced response.
Balotelli did act like a prized turkey, but Ferdinand acted like a bigger one for reacting to it.If Ferdinand had to be cleverer, what he should have done was walk up to balotelli and whisper in his ear and say ''Come and talk to me when you have a premiership medal,I've got 4''.It would have made Balotelli drop like a lead balloon. That would be a short and sweet put down and would have done the job.

KPR I applaud you for talking sense for once. Reminds me of a story (which I believe is true) I heard about Phil Neal when being fired from the Coventry job. Some of the players didn't like Phil and openly told him as he prepared to leave what they thought of him. Phil quietly left but then returned with some of the medals from his playing career that included:

    League Championship: 1975-76, 1976-77, 1978-79, 1979-80, 1981-82, 1982-83, 1983-84, 1985-86
    UEFA Cup: 1976
    Charity Shield: 1976, 1977, 1979, 1980, 1982
    European Cup: 1977, 1978, 1981, 1984
    European Super Cup: 1977
    Football League Cup: 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984

    Plus 50 England caps.

He reminded them what he had achieved compared to themselves. Classic!! Shove that up yer arse!!

I heard a similar one about Brian Clough when he was first Leeds manager,he walked up to Alan Clarke and said ''I scored 285 goals in 320 appearances for Middlesbrough, how many have you scored''.Clough in his day was a goal-machine.

I don't think it was length of the pitch, only around 20 yards, but still stupid enough to get a £5k fine and a warning. He didn't celebrate in front of the fans against City, but he gave Tevez the middle finger when he celebrated a goal in front of Neville, and then ran on the pitch as a sub when Rooney scored the winning goal in the CC semi final last year. He also kissed Scholesy on the lips when he scored a last minute winner in the league last season. Good old Red Nev. Mental to the core <ok>

Yeah, that was not cool. Although I think the papers are making a bit much out of it - it sounds like the damage was a hole in some plasterboard, or possible a few cracked tiles. When we went out of Euro 96 on penalties, one of my mates kicked a hole in his lounge wall! His parents were not impressed!

I bet it was SAF - just glad he didn't hit any of our players in the face this time... <doh>

Robbie Fowler wasn't scared of the Yernited fans when he did the ''Mourinho'' at them in 2004.

Noone walked around like you described, Neville was much more a fan rouser but I never saw harm in it, United fans loved it, nothing wrong with it on the pitch final whistle or not. Again if united won who'd care eh?
Ferdinand was pished after being beated in a Derby, fair enough, if Baloteli did that after a city loss noone would have cared one bit. TBH I would be surprised if Ferdie wasn't bothered losing that game. Handbags tho, I still don't think Baloteli did anything wrong, about time these foreign players showed some Derby spirit. Oh he winked at Ferdie too, poor Rio:)
