I think I'm in the tiny minority that actually liked Owen at Newcastle. Yes he was often injured, but was quality in his first spell when he played alongside Shearer (that Blackburn away game showing what could have happened if both had stayed fit) and quality when Allardyce was shipped out and Keegan ensured we didn't hoof long balls at him and Martins. The tripod of him behind Oba and Viduka was superb.

Most people point to the months before relegation and say he wasn't trying which I don't buy whatsoever. He missed 2 or 3 chances that he'd normally have put away and all of a sudden he was lazy? If you watch the last three months of that season again you'll see him having to drop almost to our own penalty area to get a touch of the ball such was the quality of the service. Our midfield post Milner and N'Zogbia was horrendous, with a vastly off form Damien Duff and Kevin Nolan, Jonas Gutierrez at his most infuriatingly non productive, and Danny Guthrie and Nicky Butt. If we'd had a fit and on form Joey Barton or either of Milner or Charlie we'd have created chances that he'd have put away and we'd have stayed up (0-0 at home to Portsmouth springs to mind).

Injury stopped him being a massive success, and he was the last of the 'buy aging players on massive contracts' brigade that was Freddy Shepherds trademark, but I certainly don't have the same hatred for him that most have. His high wages weren't his fault, just as Bartons and Coloccini's aren't now, nor were injuries.

This! 100%! I liked him when he was here and still do. One of my favourite players! Played immense for us when we had a remotely good team around him. He put in more effort than the rest of our strikers combined the year we went down.

Nah, can't agree with you...He said himself when he 'put himself in the shop window' and sent that stupid ****ing folder round, that he knows he wasn't playing well but he wasn't inspired...**** off, we gave you 115,000 reasons to be inspired and you, as a captain, produce that limp-dicked shower of ****e that was Villa away...If you're a professional then you should act professionally and do your job to the best of your ability REGARDLESS!

And the other ten players that produced Villa away? We were woeful all round for weeks, and if you can't even get the ball to your centre forward in your opponents half he's not exactly going to inspire you to victory is he? The brochure didn't come out until after we went down and he was out of contract (and past it or not a Championship club can't afford Owen wages, or Duff, Viduka, Martins...), and I think unprofessional is the last thing to describe him as.

Spot on again. Owen's used as a scapegoat, it's pathetic. Martins was the one who missed 2 sitters against Villa. Owen was busy being our main man in midfield, not where you'd want him but Nicky Butt was barely League 1 standard so Owen had to drop so deep.

    Why?

He even knows he'll get a bad reception so I'm sure he knows he's a ****.

Not getting paid then is he? Wonder how much you have been paid him for the few goals he has scored?

    Idiot.

Owen, like most of the other shower of **** that played the season went down all played their part in our relegation.

Both Martins and Owen (when fit) missed endless attempts which would have changed what is now history.

We have a core of players that came out of that season with respect and the rest which were gutless ****s who jumped ship when we sank and all because THEY didn't give 100%

I'd expect Martins et al to get exactly the same reception.

He already got a feisty reception at Birmingham and is bound to get an even louder one at St James'' Park!
