Even prior to Fergie we were all over the place. Ok we did well in cups now and again but Big Ron had us competing one minute and scrapping for relegation the next. We were in a relegation battle when Fergie took over were we not?

and how is it these idiots remkind us all the time of how poor fergie did to start with while telling us we dont know what its like to not follow a successful team.

    What are these people smoking?

Oh the irony of Chelsea, Liverpool and United fans debating who was lucky to win the C.L.

We were all lucky as most teams are in winning such a big cup competition.

United have not been the better side in all 4 of their C.L finals yet have won it twice. Not a bad return for some frankly abject performances. Won one by 2 very late goals when Bayern should have been out of sight and needed a wet plastic pitch and a slip from Terry to win the other.

Liverpool got in the C.L by being the 4th best team in England the season before so relied on the preceding performances of the likes of United to even be in it. They then needed a last gasp goal from hit n hope Gerrard to even get out the group, went through the semis on a 'ghost' goal and got completely dicked in the final for 90 out of 120 minutes to win on pens.

Chelsea had some luck too, people tell me.

Hope this clears it all up.

OP is a tool for even starting this nonsense.

United in 99 won the League and FA cup aswell as the CL.

A feat that far surpasses Liverpool and Chelsea who both gave up on their league campaigns and put there full effort ( not quite full with Chelsea as they had the FA Cup to consider ) into the CL.

Had both those clubs during their CL win tried to do what United did they would of won nothing imo. Rafa was the master at prioritising certain competitions over others and Chelsea were already too far gone.

Lol at the Terry slip excuse (again). The only reason it went to penalties was VDS slipping in exactly the same place as Terry when Essien's tame long shot bounced off both Rio and Vidic and landed at Fat Frank's feet. And that was your only decent shot on target all game - once again Chelsea rode their luck in the final and once again their opponents dominated possession. That should be your theme tune <ok>

We needed more luck to beat Lyon that year than we needed against your lot.

Come on Swarbs, surely you can see the overall point of my reply.

I'd have thought you were a little above picking out the little things.

Little things make the difference in football.

A goal that shouldnt of been, an offside incorrectly given.

A slip, diving the wrong way.

Little things that have a big impact.

Obviously but you can lessen the impact by playing better than the opponent, something Liverpool 05, Chelsea 2012 and United 99 all failed to do yet still won. Therefore all lucky to an extent and this thread is bullshit.

I think 99 showed more than any time since that United are never beaten.

3 or 4 times we came from behind to win in the CL that year.

It was no fluke, not at all.

I can see your overall point, and I agree that everyone needs a bit of luck - even Barca needed a slice or two to get past Chelsea in 09 and Arsenal in 11, although Chelsea and Liverpool needed quite a bit more than most for their wins imo. Which is surely the point of this debate - the more luck you get then the less of a dominant and deserving winner you are imo.

It was just a shame you spoilt what could've been a good post by trying to make the tired old claim that Utd were second best in all their CL finals, when pretty much every neutral knows we dominated the game against Chelsea. 58% possession, four shots cleared off the line and conceded a lucky goal from Chelsea's only real chance. Says it all really <ok>

Actually I worded my post very carefully to state United were not the better team in any of their finals which to my mind they were not. 2008 to my mind was the closest final I can remember. United better first half, Chelsea second and fairly even extra time. United had one of the line, Chelsea hit the woodwork twice etc. Truely great final. The other 3 you were outplayed, not a WUM but the way most neutrals see it.

And we didn't come from behind?

    Napoli 3-1 down
Barca 2-0 down with 10 men
Bayern 1-0 down with 3 minutes to go.

    Good point though. <ok>

Fair enough if you see it that way, probably just differences between Utd and Chelsea fans' perceptions. My recollection of the game was we pretty much completely dominated the first half - your best chance was Rio's header onto his own bar, and Cech had to make two great saves to keep you in it. The goal you got helped you in the second half, but we absorbed most of the pressure with no real clear cut chances for Chelsea other than striking the post from distance and Drogba shooting wide, whilst Terry had to clear two Giggs chances off the line. So whilst Chelsea made much of the running, and hit plenty of shots in the second half, we were comfortable for most of it and it was pretty even in terms of actual chances to score.

Also I don't think Bayern dominated the 99 final in the same way that many others claim - they had the better of the game and the chances, but we created quite a lot, and were never really on the ropes in the same way Chelsea were in the first half in 08. The ones against Barca...yeah...let's not go there ;)

Swarbs, you did not 'dominate' the game in '08, you were perhaps the better side but we gave you a difficult time.

We've been shagged out of the CL multiple times in recent years; Monaco, Liverpool, Barca and that penalty slip was harsh so I'm not too fussed what anyone thinks about our win this year.

We have also been shaggd out as you put it.

Porto being the obvious one, a game that had our goal stood would of meant Mourinho never reached the heights he did <ok>

Oh dear. Swarbs had to answer for you: 'Relegated in 1922, 1931, 1937 and 1974 IIRC. .

Served with a winding up order in early 1900s, had to be bailed out. Bought out of receivership in the 1930s.'

So, you've been relegated once in modern memory and were sent a winding up in order in 1900.

Oh, you United fans have suffered
