Agger clearly has love for the club an he wants to stay. Reminds me of the Alonso situation. Alonso loved the club but was discontent with Rafa sniffing about for his replacement so he decided to leave before he was pushed out.
Coates is miles off Agger at the moment. He looks decent and I don't doubt he'll develop plus he will get regular game time as cover but to put the pressure on him of trying to fill that spot all season?? That's exactly the sort of pressure and weight of expectation that could destroy an otherwise promising career.
I agree with this. Not having a go at Coates- he has great potential-but he's not an instant replacement for Agger just yet.
No me neither mate I like the look of him but he's got a lot to learn. Definitely not seen enough yet to suggest he's ready to be thrown in at the deep end for our sake and for his own. I'd have no problem seeing him start all the Europey and CC games thus giving Agger a break between Prem games but would we suffer defensively if he was playing every league game...unfortunately I think the answers yes...at the moment. Anyway as I said before I hope this is all bullshit and Agger starts the season in a Red shirt showing off his new knuckles
This looks like a complete non-story Agger said he doesn't want to go, Rodgers said he wants to keep him and he is very important - where's the story in this??

Having to sell to buy. Remind you of anything? Welcome back, Tom! See the Shanks quote in my sig? Kenny understood that. I don't think FSG do. I'm reminded of the phrase, "Know the price of everything but the value of nothing." Agger's injuries have been better, yet FSG also sacked one of the best sports medicine experts in the world. Our injuries went down last season from 126 to 95, putting us 3rd lowest in the injury table behind City and Wigan. Utd had the worst record with 305, which puts the previous season's 126 into perspective, too.
agger says he wants to stay - that should be the end of the discussion it is nice that the current champions of england want one of our players to improve their team if agger is sold after he said he wants to stay the owners better get ready for a backlash - they said they want success - you don't get success by selling your top players , especially ones who are committed to the cause hello all
this just hope the owners are not tempted by some crazy offer from moneybags city rodgers may just be playing it cute here - he tells agger he wont be sold for any amount of money - he then lets city think he might be available - city concentrate on trying to sign agger and end up wasting time and looking desparate by offering silly money for a player who they can't get fiendishly clever methinks
Is it a non story? City have bid for him...City also have money to burn...we've advertised our best players are for sale if the "deal suits us" (or suits FSG?) and Agger who doesn't usually say much has felt the need to speak out on the subject. Not sure we can entirely blame the hacks for this one. Hopefully nothing will come of it...but fair to say there is a chance Agger might not be wearing a Red shirt next year if "we" get a bid that suits "us".
We're not most clubs in Europe, we're one of the biggest clubs in the world. FSG made a profit swapping Torres and Babel for Carroll and Suarez so that whole media "£120m investment" is BS. We'd have a budget from income anyway, which should be a sizable sum now it's not all going on debt interest. But we're back selling top players and hoping the cheaper replacement works out.
BR has done this twice now. if asked about our players he just needs to keep it shut. As soon as the Carroll thing has blown over this has started. We all know players have a price but opening your gob in front of the press just starts the crap flowing. BR has been good in front of the press in general but needs to put accross a different message when it comes to transfers. Example. Press. What about Agger? BR. Not for sale. Man City. 100 million for Agger. BR. ok. Easy really.
What? Torres ****ed us over the day before the window shut remember? So we bought Carroll for extortionate money so people like you didn't think they were money grabbing bastards. Then 6 months down the line Kenny was given plenty of money to buy other players - you need to get over this.
We haven't sold him yet, so my stance on the owners is fairly reserved. £20m+ is a good investemnt imo, last summer we cleared some space on the wage bill and the owners actually put their hands in their pockets. What tarnished the net spend was the fact that some of the players we bought never lived up to their price tag over ONE season. Henderson is good and has time. Enrique is a good LB despite dips in form. Coates is a great prospect. Downing will never live up to £20m but can do better this season. Adam wasn't expensive but he isn't good enough, especially if Sahin comes in. If we keep Agger and bring in Sahin and another attacker in Tello or someone similar then it will be a good summer.
That's true but then you also have to take into account that rushing out to buy Mandy for that price was a massive **** up. An injured player who we could have got for half the price had we waited (or had time to scout around for another player). Had they come out and said we offered Newcastle £25 mill but they wanted £35 mill not one of us would have criticised them as long as that money was still available the following summer. Also take into account they got the club dirt cheap (relatively speaking) so absolutely should have invested the way they did (and fair play that they did that). The concern is that advertising players for sale sends out a terrible image whether its just mind games or not. Admitting every player has his price will not only invite bids for the likes of Agger but also Suarez, Lucas, Reina etc... As usual we all reserve judgement until something actually happens but if we end up selling Agger it will stink to high heaven IMO and put us onto a very slippery slope.
I complete agree with your last comment and have said so many times, but to be fair the 'every player has his price' came from BR and not the owners. You have got to ask yourself who's **** up it was to spend that money on Carroll, KK imo not the owners.
