Why does he always hoof the ball down the line after we've kicked off?

Its not necessarily just when we kick off, he does seem to panic a little and just get rid of it sometimes though. Id rather him hoof it and be safe than lose the ball as the last man, if he doesnt feel confident enough to hold onto it

AdamBanana, to know this happens regularly you'd have to regularly watch games which you definitely don't do :p

It's to put immediate pressure on the defenders, when you have someone like Lambert who can flick on and take the ball down it puts us in a great position to attack them and potentially score. To be perfectly honest I would rather them do that then pass the ball along the backline, allowing the opposition to press high up the pitch and force a mistake from kick-off.

I'd rather we passed it out from the back. It's a more attractive style and, though opinions will be divided on this, I reckon it would be more successful overall. I hate to see a team give away possession so cheaply, and when you play a pass from left back to right midfield, as Fox often does, then it seems to go astray more often that it reaches its target.

Obviously there are merits in playing those kinds of balls, and it's quite a popular strategy with a lot of British players, but I personally think that defenders should be taught to involve themselves more in the passing game, and build up from the back, rather than just being taught to get rid of it. I doubt Danny is doing it because he's been instructed to do so, and I think it's far more likely that he plays the game the way that he's always played the game, and it's a habit of his to attempt long balls.

I have seen much of this hoofing from saints before. It seems Pompey won't be the only ones subjected to L1 standard footy this season.

Every time I watch him play he always hoofs the ball up to Lambert. He did it all the time last season and in pre season he did it against Ajax and against Udinese.
    why?It's so annoying.

Yes,I don't understand why some people say this.I don't think he has been instructed to do it either,it doesn't make any sense as Adkins wants us to play from the back and not hoof it up to Lambert and lose possession.

I agree with passing out from the back, but this is from kick-off so would rather see it played forward. From goal kicks a lot of people don't like the way we play it short, but this is so important for a team like us to keep hold of possession, if we play one of the 'big' teams and we launch it, especially with Davis ability to kick it in to touch almost every time :) we lose possession and therefore put more pressure on us to defend the next attack.

What's the point in hoofing it up to Lambert after we've kicked off?We just lose possession...

I find it very annoying too. We lose possesion 99% of the time and it just seems so pointless. Players like Jack Cork will always come short when the back four have the ball and a simple pass into them is much more effective.

Surely if Adkins had an issue with the 'hoof up the line' he would change it...afterall - he is the man in charge.

I would say from all the games I've seen 60-70% of time we keep hold of possession, I stated earlier the reasons why we do it. Personally I would rather get the ball forward and put pressure on them than them putting pressure on us, especially now were in the PL.

Because it's better to lose the ball in their half than our half. Also, if they gain possession it could make them attack and allow us to take advantage of the space they have left open.
