Vetch i too was extremely envious of Dai winning the Victor Meldrew Award, and i have made it a priority this year to break Dai's domination of this most prestigious of annual awards. I think i have made a good start with my ramblings on the olympic football team, he must now be aware that he has some serious competition.
I think we should be proud of our country and what we have achieved, it's been a fantastic games and the legacy of it will ring for years. As for the cost of it, let's wait and see on the final outcome of both the games. The Paralympics has already sold 2.5m tickets, slightly more than the 100k in china. I would think there will be closer to a profit at the end than a loss
So it's a three horse race at the moment then Mabon. I've already got Knackered on board,so eat your heart out. ... Perhaps musty can get one of his competions up and running. Any more suggestions/entries for The Victor Meldrew,2012/13 crown?
Living in London I was fairly reticent to the games coming here but as soon as it begun I was sucked in and loved every minute of it. The foreseen problems didn't happen and the immense pride seen on all Londoners faces was evident. The fact we won so many medals is awesome. Every time I see us winning a medal I am in awe. Team GB have done us proud. I do worry about the legacy but I truly think we would have learned the lessons of Sydney, Athens and Beijing and it will be great for London and East London especially. LOCOG, for them being a for-profit organisation and are obviously going to pay themselves handsomely, have actually done a good job but without the help of the awesome volunteers it would not be so great. There are sports that I don't agree with being in the Olympics (football, tennis, ...) purely because I don't think it should be in if it's not the pinnacle of the sport. But I'll leave that gripe for another time cos I must go and buy some Paralympic tickets.
Obviously there are more important things in the world. But this has brought the country together in ways you couldn't imagine after the riots of last year.
No-one can approve of the riots, but that's a different issue. It's all about social control of the population. Governments, all of them, need a compliant population. How is that achieved? Well, religion used to be the main provider of the glue for this cohesion, but as religion has gone backwards, and people are less influenced by it,alternatives are needed. Enter the royals, with their weddings, births, and numerous other activities. Everything, except their ablutions, is laid before us. Many people cannot go a day without needing to know what a particular useless individual has been doing. Then you have the olympics and the like, and when all else fails, and you seem to be heading for the scrap heap, you start a war the other side of the world. Nothing quite galvanises the population like a war, especially if you win. So,how do you get the people to forget the appalling things that go on in their name? To forget how the banks have brought us to the brink of ruin. To forget how the politicians are constantly taking advantage of their status, and sticking their snouts in the trough. I could go on,but you get my drift. You get them to forget by using all the tricks in the book, some of which I have outlined above.
ffs this is about sport and being British, not all the ails in the world. I mentioned the riots for a little bit of context. If you can't see this brings our nation together that is up to you, but it does you can see it on tv and you certainly can when you are in the events
They are connected. If you can't understand that, fine. No need for "ffs". Can't someone hold a viewpoint that is contrary to yours without getting the "ffs" treatment? Did I use "ffs"?
No but you are being ridiculous and absurd, and I reply how I feel about that, so ffs is warranted , perhaps you being sensitive you want a instead ?
So,because YOU are unable to comprehend my posts,I am "being ridiculous and absurd". You are clearly content to be shepherded into your chair and merely goggle at the box in the corner, unable to think about the why or the wherefore. It's people like you that maintain the status quo,and then complain like hell if things go wrong for you. Your use of "ffs" was not necessary. If you don't agree with me,just say so. Alternatively, you could exercise your brain and make a constuctive comment. "ffs" is not debate.
The Olympics has been a magnificent sporting spectacle - but it's political influence is huge. Why do you think Dave has been trying to get to every event where GB have a chance of winning a medal.
ffs is not aimed at you is it ? And if I think a comment is ridiculous I will say it ok ? Its about opinion and I will not censor my comments in case it hurts your feelings, and I mean that for all my comments. I am not attacking you personally as I don't know you, just your opinions if I don't agree with them.
And I bet he didn't have to queue for,or even buy,any tickets. I also bet he and his cronies didn't have their corned beef sandwiches taken off them at the gate. Doubtful that he was ever stuck in a traffic jam either. Useful things Zil lanes.
Valley, your "ffs" comment was in response to my post, nobody else's,so clearly it was aimed at me. It represented your response to a post that left you struggling. "Ffs" is a much less taxing reply, and I do understand why you felt the need to resort to it. If you intend saying a post is "ridiculous",perhaps you could put your thinking cap on,engage your brain, and tell us why you think it's "ridiculous".
Dave doesn't do corned beef. He'd have had his tuna and cucumber sarnies and a quick Pims in the Bullingdon Club before heading for Stratford
How is for ****s sake (ffs) aimed at you ? Why do I think your comments are ridiculous, the answer has been given, this is about sport and Britain not all the world's ails, sorry if you missed that ! Can I ask if we had spent billions bringing the world cup here would you be saying the same then ?
Certainly would. Bloody waste of money that could be far better utilised elsewhere. Sorry about that.
