I have no doubt this is down the the Chairman and his planning or lack of.... You simply can't blame a new manager who has just literally walked through the door for our transfer dealings when we know for the best part of the last 4 years, Levy has solely taken change of that responsibility. I don't know what winds me up more. Our lack of squad building in essential positions or our inability of getting rid of the endless deadwood pool of dross that has been draining the coffers for so long. Last season or two we had too many strikers; now we have no options at all. How can that possibly happen?!
Sorry, but I must have missed all of that. From what I saw, most of us didn't want AVB (myself included), and even those that are "pro" AVB have expressed a guarded optimism.
Defoe can't cut it , better to sell him and move on . We would be better to play the Spanish way , our strikers are a grade below the midfield in quality.
I'd rather play with no strikers than have Defoe on the park, let alone as a lone striker. He's thinking about going to Reading ffs! That just proves the extent to which he has fallen off the pace of the EPL. I'm sorry, but he is not, and never had been, a consistent top 4 striker. Too greedy, cannot hold up the ball, woeful at link-up play, far too limited. I said it a few seasons ago, but he's an inferior version of Darren Bent.
Years ago when we sold Defoe I'd been happy to get rid for about 10m for a while. Keane had shown much more desire and all-round ability when he'd got his game time and then forged that excellent partnership with Berba. My God - to think that he is now our only striker (sorry but Kane cannot be counted - he's basically not played for the first team yet). This is insane. That someone who was not good enough in the years when we were mid-table is now our only option with a week to go before the season starts! This is worse than when we were left with only Bent, Pav and Campbell! I really hope that we have something lined up with Ade but even then we need (at least) one more striker. Having said all this I would still keep Defoe, even if we sign a couple of strikers (!) cos he's such a great impact sub.
Defoe isn't as tragic as some are making out, he is a good quality squad player, simple player that just wants to score goals, yet he is also a decent footballer and offers more then Darren Bent (who is imo is one of the worst footballers this league has seen)....yes before anyone says it...bent is a top goal scorer, can't argue with his record yet he can't form any type of partnership. Defoe has formed partnerships, like with crouch at pompey and can work with a big man. So I hope he stays as a squad player but not as a lone striker then we're in trouble.
I quite like Defoe as an option. Not enough though. You're still a couple of strikers short (obviously).
Just check your poll comments from a couple of months ago HIAG... http://www.not606.com/showthread.ph...-in-the-right-direction-at-this-point-in-time It's full of slightly premature optimism that I feel should probably be tempered a little until we actually kick a ball. I'm not on here to pick fights with anyone, just to tell people to take it easy until matters are setlted and the season has started. Examples being... Chirpy - "Voted Yes. We seem to be doing all the right things." The Sundance Yid - "Never felt this confident going into a season." "Personally, the signings brought in, the attendance of some of our youth prospects in that photograph, and the way AVB has been talking leads me to think we're going to have a good few years ahead of us, maybe even a title..." SuperSpursAllStars - "I havent been this excited about a new season for a long time, we have done some great early season business and it make a refreshing change to not have to wait until 11:59pm on 31st August." GioDosDallas - "With AVB in charge and the signings that have been made, all evidence points to everyone at the club pulling in the same direction... I even took time out in my recent blog to express just how good things look right now with the way our club is going, where I claimed it's probably the most excited i've ever been going into a season in my twenty years of supporting Spurs." redwhiteandermblue - "AVB is the man, so I'll back him, and since his appointment the club has done all the right things. I'm definitely seeing the argument that at this point Spurs need a young manager who's more tactically astute, and that AVB is that guy." I'm not against enthusiasm and support but nothing... I repeat nothing has been achieved yet to justify one reaction or another so I'll wait to see what unfolds.
"sell Defoe" "play the Spanish way with no strikers" I think some of you have been out in the bloody sun too long!! Defoe, despite his shortcomings (and that is not a slant on his height) is a decent striker - not the best by any means, but with the right support will score goals. So he is greedy - he is an effing striker ffs, they are meant to be greedy!! Or would you rather we played like that sorry mob down the road and try and pass it into the flipping net? As for playing the Spanish way - oh really? We would be relegation fodder within a few months. Levy is to blame for this mess. Always trying to save a few million here and there is costing us more than he is saving. Without European football we generate less income. While I do not want to see him paying whatever clubs ask, if he is such a good money man, then he should know when the deal is not going to get any sweeter and go for it - but no, he holds out and we lose out. Thanks yet again Levy!! AVB has his work cut out as it is - so he hardly needs Levy making it more difficult for him by not getting at least one decent striker in.
Haha - it really is quite funny what people will say about the state of a football club based on a photo or a few quotes from the manager and no other evidence at all. Trouble is that the internet and 24-hour media needs to keep making us believe that a football club is some sort of never-ending soap opera rather than an entity that has a football team which...plays football matches. And everything else is only relevant in how it affects those matches. Still - the majority of people wanted Harry out based on very little footballing evidence so I guess heaping praise on AVB on very little footballing evidence is just par for the course... Personally I'll still be excited and positive come kick-off next Saturday - I've just not had reason to form one single opinion about AVB or how he wants us to play or how he judges players or all the actually relevant things that he will do aside from giving interviews. (And let's not forget - pre-season means next to nothing. I always refer to how awesome we looked in our 100% win (I believe it was) pre-season with Ramos).
I'm really shocked that anyone would think the Spurs midfield is remotely capable of playing the "Spanish way". Are you going to make an agreement with the opponent's defense to open up for Bale and Lennon to run in a straight line through 10 people? OK then, that might work. Players like Lennon, Bale, Walcott would be completely wasted on teams that try play the "Spanish way".
As we have no strikers of any merit at this moment in time, then this would be very cavalier and exciting. As it has been pointed out, I have had one to many , and been in the sun all day but always a romantic. Chin up Sid
I think Modric and a few others owe the club a season of real effort.Wether " the Harry for England" thing was the cause of that seven match disintergration ,I don't know. But they owe the fans something!! We had the players last season. This season looks a bit dodgy doesn't it Harry?
i will show some signs of disgruntlement once it hits 11pm on transfer deadline day if things have not changed my friend .
poor show by a few of you who seem to be enjoying the fact that some fans maybe should not have backed the new man and the chairman...no one is blind in their backing..but no matter how you look at it..im glad Harry went you say you dont know how people can form such positive opinions yet you form negative ones..im talking to you Lenny. at the end of the day i think we all want what is best for the club..and we are all a tad bemused at the lack of activity.
