I think the problem is when a really horrific crime happens lots of people (me included) think "hang that bastard". In the cold light of day one's thought processes would probably be quite different.

I'd bring back the death penalty for drivers who hog the middle/outside lane on motorways - without trial.

I'd do it for all cyclists - the ultimate urban terrorists. I'd save those who may be good enough to win an Olympic gold medal though.

Agreed, I hate cyclists with a passion. They think they can go where they like, they get these lovely green cycle lanes which they only use when it suits them and they don't pay a penny towards them. Bastards with their stupid crash helmets, it'd probably do them good to fall off and crack their skulls a few times. Might knock some sense into them.

Eliminating miscarriages of justice is clearly desirable, but not very realistic.
People also get falsely identified and you risk defendants being incorrectly released, with jurors not wanting to send someone to their death.

The death penalty isn't a deterrent either, according to the statistics.
It's also incredibly expensive, rather counter-intuitively.
Basically, it's not a very good idea.

Death penalty for the ****s on here that keep changing their username. In fact, death penalties all round for everybody who even slightly annoys me.

i think a few are confusing the issue here.

the death penalty as a deterrant isnt what i am arguing, thats like saying prison doesnt work so just scrap it and let criminals go.

point is/was that miscarriages of justice are used to ''prove'' the death penalty as wrong, whereas it needs to be a wider debate.

tbh depends how you look at things. i think incarceration in a proper prison is more barbaric
and for someone like hindley, its barbaric to see them being fed and clothed etc after what they did

I don't think we should be giving the government any new powers that they can kill us with

I agree with Gambol, if you change your user name there should be a wee note next to it saying " formerly known as whoever". It does my nut in because sometimes I know that someone used to be known as something else but I can't figure out who they were, either on here or the old SPN. So, yes - off with their heads.

True Dan. But if it was one of my kids I think I would probably feel different.

A tough one to wrestle with ones conscious.

If hanging the guilty name changers was deemed too severe an alternative sentence could be cleaning Tina's feet - using only their tongue - or re-posting all of Pope's recipes.
