He sort of is box-to-box, but takes on a more defensive role within that. If I was going to choose from defensive or attacking, I'd certainly choose the former.

Probably, but Perker has also been class.

Also, I always thought that holding midfielder and defensive midfielder are the same role.

As much as I think he's brilliant I'd say no and agree with the majority of shouts on here and go with Essien

I'd say Parker and Essien are box to box midfielders.

Tiote comes under the 'midfield enforcer' category really, he's too damn tough to be lumped in the same category as lesser beings such as Mikel, Song and De Jong.

What exactly does a defensive midfielder do? 'Hold's back' and lets the other midfielders attack, which is a defensive strategy by the player.

    You twat <doh>

I'd say Essien and Yaya Toure are the two best defensive midfielders in the League. Tiote is best of the rest in my opinion. That said a lot of a defensive midfielders work goes unnoticed, we notice Tiote because he's our player, but there are a lot of unsung heroes such as Mulumbu at West Brom. I'd still say Tiote though. ;)

  8. A defensive mid is someone that will guard the back four and nulify the enemy threat.

A holding mid is someone who holds the ball, beats players, and distrubtes the ball around the pitch.

Wilshere is a holding mid, but is he a DM? No. He's more of an attacking asset. Tiote isn't a defensive mid at all, he works all ends of the pitch and is a big part of our attacks with he creativity and influence in the game.

There IS a difference. Sergio Busquets is an example of a DM. Tiote/Wilshere are examples of holding mids.

Yes, a holding midfielder is someone who 'holds the ball' and 'distributes the ball'. But that is exactly what a defensive midfielder does. They hold back in a defensive position and spread the ball around. They keep the ball and try to win the ball back. Defensive midfielder = holding midfielder. <ok>

That's what I like to hear.

Tiote IS our defensive midfielder imo. If you had to pick one who held the role more than others, it would be him by a mile. He nullifies the enemy threat, and wins the ball, and distributes it around the pitch, but I believe that we primarily rely on him to win the ball (i.e. a big part of defending) and to guard the defence in general. You can say that he plays a part in attacking, but so do some of our defenders, like Simpson and Enrique.

Definitely more of a defending asset than an attacking asset though.

    You're a knobhead.

He isn't a bloody defender man. He's a defensive midfielder/holding midfielder. This involves duties which guard the back four, such as winning the ball, holding the ball and spreading the passes around. It's a combination of defence and midfield duties. You're acting like a DM hangs around the back four as a sort of forward defender who tries to do what the other defenders do anyway, but that's a load of shiet.

Why can't you just argue back on topic instead of calling people '******s' which could be taken quite offensively. So seriously just **** off.

  17. Do people care when they say **** like that to me? No, so if people are offended they can go choke on some dicks because no one cares ever about how i feel.

It was a joke to be fair, atleast it wasn't meant to be hurtful, but now you'll probably say i'm being ignorant. <doh>

A defensive midfielder or a holding midfielder is often likened to an evolved version of the old-school sweeper.
The responsibilities of defensive midfielders usually include:
Screening the defence by harrying and tackling the opposition teams' attackers and defenders.
Covering the positions of full-backs, midfielders and even centre-backs as they advance into attack. This can be during open play or during set pieces such as free-kicks or corners.
Retaining distribution nearer the defence. As passing square across the defence can be especially risky, the presence of the defensive midfielder just in front of defenders provides a relatively safer option going forward.
Directing the distribution towards the flanks or further up front.
Directing the opposition distribution to the flanks or deeper down their end, where they are less effective. Defensive midfielders are often pulled slightly towards the flank to deal with the threat of wingers cutting infield.

Although the duties of defensive midfielders are primarily defensive, some midfielders are deployed as deep-lying playmakers, due to their ability to dictate tempo from a deep position with their passing. As they are not defensive specialists, they are typically supported by a more defensive holding midfielder.
